Mortar and Pestle help.

Ok, stupid question time. Just started playing this game tonight, and I learned how to make a Mortar and Pestle and then made one. So, my stupid question his, how the crap do I place this thing so I can use it? It doesn't seem to work quite the same as the campfire I made before and I'm not sure what the heck it is I need to be able to use this thing now. I'm sure it's probably something obvious, as that's usually the case, but I certainly haven't noticed it yet.

Its like the campfire, and also, you need other engrams to create differents things, such a narcotic, for example...

put it into your hotbar on the bottom, then you just hit the corresponding number key (as with using any other item normally). It'll hover the mortar and pestle over the ground - green means it can be placed and red means it can't be due to being obstructed. I like to place my mortar and pestles near my campfire/cookingpot/storage bins, that way I'm not having to walk too far to get materials.

Oh and you can't really "use" the mortar and pestle until you have some engrams unlocked for it, such as narcotics, sparkpowder, or gunpowder, etc. When you unlock those engrams, they show up inside the mortar and pestle UI.

Place it over a foundation. You will also need some engrams to craft something on the mortar.

Do I need crafting engrams before I can even place the mortar and pestle? It keeps showing green when I try and place it on the floor of the tower the group I joined is building, but I have yet to be able to actually set it down anywhere.

you gotta click it twice. once to place, and if you move your mouse it will rotate, click again and it will place

Some items allow you to rotate the item on the second click before perma placing

If it shows up green it should be placeable... Perhaps this is a bug in the recent update? I remember the preserving bin became unplaceable on accident in a previous update.
