Beyond that though spike walls do in fact do damage, just not any noticeable amount.
They are best used as "field barricades" to protect your tames from dilos or raptors ect.
For your intended application though they are really just cosmetic.
I gave it some thought as to when they work and when they don't, and basically you need to build a wall first, then put spikes in front of it. The wall stops wild dinos, and when they attack the wall they wind up attacking the spikes. Only when they actually attack the spikes does it seem to hurt them. Spikes gives walls an ability to bite back. But even if it's designed to be that way, the item description is very misleading. It says it hurts anything that TOUCHES them, when if fact it doesn't even slow them down.
But on the other hand they're still kind of neccessary if you dont want to come home to your base to find a spino broke a hole through your wall and killed half ur dinos before it was taken down, and if you dont want to spend forever gather rocks to build a perimeter of stone. They're basically a jagged pill you gotta swallow, no pun intended. Unless, maybe, you could build a wall high enough that wild dinos were never able to see a reason to attack, but sometimes i feel like some of them. like the rex, attack structures for no apparant reason. Anyway, hope the devs make some changes. Good luck.
Edit: Uploading video evidence now.
Even devs have stated that they do no damage in PvE. Apparently because people can kite them into them and get exp... but apparently its ok to do it in PvP even though that sounds like a piss poor way to level up...
Experiment it for at least an hour. 4 bronto, 3 carno, 3 rex, 1 spino, when they attack they died from spike walls spikes.
Before all that experiment, i was chilling right next to my spike wall, then when i turn, saw a wild rex try to get to me, stuck in the spike, then he proceed to bite (attack) the spike and died.
