You simply hook everything up as you normally would and then set a pin code on the things you want to control. Lights, doors, turrets, windows, etc can be pin coded. Then you make sure you set up the keypad to receive power from the same generator that you have hooked all your lights up to. When you hold E over the keypad you get the option to either activate/open or deactivate/close pin coded devices. Choose either one and enter the pin code you set and you can turn things on/off or open/close them.
That's fine if you just have lights, but generators run for one real life hour on a single gallon of gas, and you get five gallons of gas every time you get enough oil and hide to make it. Eventually when you get things like refrigerators, turrets and air conditioners you will want your generator running 24/7, so it won't really matter if you leave your lights on all the time then.
Seems rather silly to have a seperate generator for those, just run cables up and electrical boxes
