Fire places in a base

Quick question, I'm fairly new to the game and want to put a fire in my base to cook with, can a just put a campfire down? or do a have to research a furnace when I get a higher level? (btw my base is made out of wood...not sure if that matters or not...)

Your house will not burn down if you put a campfire in it. But a fireplace would be a nice addition to the game. Like after cooking pot.
