Wondering how to get Oil?
hi i was wondering how to get Oil, i was never interested in water creatures, but basically got a megalodon, so i tried reading the map (which is also difficult cause you cant open maps on watercreatures ( i dont mean land/water creatures like turtles/crocs ) )and basically 4-6 megalodons attacked me and i couldnt mount back up anymore cause i didnt had my megalodon on passive. so i died and had to retrieve my megalodon at some later point with a flyer.

anyways.

so getting to a underwatercave with a megalodon or something else, then you simply have to have enough oxygen skilled or bufffood and just go into the cave and get oil right?

so my questions are:

1. can i only get oil in caves? (or can i somehow interact with those leaking oilstones)
2. what watercreature should i use to get there fast so i maybe dont need that much oxygen? i mean are ichythosaurus (dolphins) ok too for that?
3. can i go alone without problems, or should i go with a friend on the same mount you recommended?
4. can i park my "watercreature" somewhere there without it getting attacked?
5. the underwater caves are marked on a map online, but you can also see them if you see those oil leaking stones right?

Sarcos and turtles can breathe underwater. Spinos can't.
Ok. In that case sarco is the best choice in terms of speed. But youll also need level 35 for the saddle so if yoire under this Itchy is easiest because you can craft the saddle on low levels :P

To get Oil just look for the rocks that leak black stuff theres some very close to shore in places (west coast at lest) where you can swim to them mine the full stack and get back to shore with less than 100 oxygen.

I can safely say that the Plesiosaur is the best mount for pretty much any aquatic activity. It's just as fast, if not faster then the Ichthyosaurus and the Sarcosuchus. And has about as much HP as a T.rex. As for damage, I'm not sure how high it is, but it's definitely around the same level as Spino/Rex.

That said, they are a nightmare to tame, so I would reccomend using an Ichthyosaurus or Megalodon for gathering oil, pearls and underwater crystals instead.

Unless it was recently changed and I didn't notice, I wouldn't really recommend a Sarco. Don't get me wrong, they're pretty awesome at killing stuff and they are incredibly fast... in a straight line. They steer like a drunken cow and (here is where the "unless they changed" it comes in) they do not dive. For straight up oil/pearl diving I would suggest a megalodon or ichthyosaur, possibly with sarco/plesio/mega bodyguards.

ressurecting an old thread are we?
To answer your question, yes. There are several ways.
1. You can harvest small amounts of oil from Trilobites along the beaches... usually one or two kills before the others leave the area. A Sabertooth works well and will gain more than by hand.

2. You can brave the shores, cliffs, and icebergs in the snow biome. There are the same "oil deposit rocks" there as on the underwater slopes in the ocean which give a fair amount of oil. If you lack cold weather gear (which I am guessing you do) Get fully healthed up and make a dash along the river running between the 2 snow biome moutains. IF you make it to the northern beach between the two mountains, there are several oil rocks on the sand bars along the beach... and not TOO many carnivores on those sandy snow covered beaches. Getting back to warmer weather then becomes the issue. You can also make a dash along the beach from the east near hidden lake.

3. Another way for a low level to get oil is to take a raft along the snow biome beaches with about 6 campfires on it. Bring lots of cooked meat, watch your health, and watch out for the Argies.

no need to go in water at all but you will need full fur armor & 30+ fortitude and Ankylo.
Just follow shoreline starting on The Northern Shores, The Northern Plains to Whitesky Peak ( http://ark.gamepedia.com/The_Island ).
Ride your Ankylo and hit all those black rock https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuAZfkMaf4I
If you have Quetz you can use it to transport you and ankylo to location, that is easiest way if you ask me...

@preorbital was 6mins faster :)

I just fly a ptera in and out. They are fast.

pteronodons dont have any weight but i live in redwood and i have got an argy and lots of bears and megaloceros spawn there so i have got pelt enough to make fur armor

I use a scuba and a Dunkleosteus, it's by far the best and fastest way to get oil on the sea ground.

Or if you are playing on The Center Map, the top of both snow mountains can gives you around 1500 Oil per trip whitout the need to go in water.

my game puts me back into the main menu if i load the center xD
