How to Access RCON with Putty or similiar?

I've tried all the settings I can think of and it isn't seeming to work. I did some searching and people were recommending to use a minecraft RCON program.... O_o

I feel silly but.. I.. the old server thread is no longer pinned, I can't seem to find a central source of information anymore? The official WIKI, on a pinned thread doesn't mention RCON at all!

I feel like I must be missing something obvious, maybe I'm searching for the wrong things, I was mostly getting threads from before of people asking for RCON.

I also searched the files on the server and didn't see an RCON application, even though someone mentioned there was an "official" one? OR maybe I misunderstood?

I feel rather silly.. but I'd rather just ask than stumble in the dark much longer.

So you're saying ssh in right? Use this (assuming you are ssh'ing into a Linux Distro)

Thanks for replying! Sorry I suppose I wasn't specific enough. Currently the server is running windows because we had it before they had the linux one out, and haven't had a need to change yet.

I was trying to connect directly to "RCON" via the port they had you specify, using PUTTY, I tried all the options Telnet, SSH, etc. It just gives some variation of the server closed the connection.

It's been a looong time, but I seem to remember using PUTTY to do RCON stuff on a minecraft server a few years[3 or 4] ago. But it's all fuzzy memories now.

TL:DR

For now I was just trying to connect at all, but I was hoping to do some automation at some point soon for server updates. That's the main thing I wanted, something scriptable.
