Rex's can get just inside most of the cave entrances but they can not go down inside them. Never attempted to take a bird into one but you might be able to by mounting the bird then using the admin cheat "walk" on the bird to force it to walk on the ground, and attempt to walk it in.
The cave at 68.3 56.1 has some nice buildable areas in it as well, several large chambers but nothing like the one in the northeast corner, still you could build some nice buildings in it. this cave does have the snakes in it that could present a problem.
The north central cave has lava in it as well, but that should be expected, its by a volcano.
Can fitt plenty of Rex and Argentavis Ankylo etc.. Perfect protection for your dinos.
Good strategic area:
No fresh spawn points arround (have to walk all the way there or have beds)
Close to all the main mountains for easy metal/obsidian/crystal
Lots of forests arround for cover and wood supply
Can tame almost every dino close to base
Nice leveled terrain for building outside
Close to vulcano for end-game top of the vulcano base
There are many who say that the ones who control the middle-cave and the red obelisk mountain win the battle for resources.
