Map - What is the point?
What is the point in the map for this game when it doesn't tell you your current location? I was playing on a private server and you can see, roughly, where you are on the map. But on two official servers that I tried there is nothing. It's not like you can open the map and see distinguishable features and recognise where you are, everything looks the same. I died before I could get enough hide to create a bed in the house I had spent hours building. Now I can't find it because the map doesn't tell me where I am. The coordinates were about 70/70.

Which year was the "map" created in history? How did people use it without a computer? How did people drive from A to B without a GPS back in the days??? Woah this world is too advanced for me

When you open a paper map IRL does it show/tell you where you are ?

use basic navigational skills.

The red obelisk is NW. Green is SEish. Blue is sort of southwestern central.

Check the direction the sun rises and falls.

Navigation complete.

If you're not playing on a primitive server, you'll eventually level to the point where you can craft a GPS, at which point I believe the lack of a map marker wouldn't matter. Until then, hugging the coasts and paying attention to the rivers/mountains is probably your best bet if you want to play official, at least until you get familiar with the lay of the land.
Compass and GPS. Problem solved.

If the map showed your exact location, it would render both these things completely useless.

The map does help a lot, although it doesn't do the job by itself due to its realistic simplicity. Combine it with your own direction sense when you travel, major landmarks and maybe the compass and it's not too hard to get around.

The island's floating obelisks are great landmarks to use if you need to pass through thick vegetation and lose your sense of direction when you don't pop out where you expected to. Just make note of which direction the nearest obelisk is, what direction the nearest beach (or other landmark) is at, and if you get lost you can just try to spot your landmark to regain your senses or turn towards the beach and keep going straight to eventually emerge in familiar terrain.

Also, things get easier the more you travel, as you'll have more familiar landmarks to navigate by.

An important feature of the map is placing text markers.

I was able to navigate just fine the second I crafted my compass. Reading a map and figureing out where you are isn't that hard. All you truely need is the map and a compass. But the GPS does have advantages.

They also have an option "show position on map"(In the main menu screens) I use that since I have no sense of direction ^^

Can you do this on any multiplayer server?

Blue is south east/central and green is southwest

Knew how to use the map efficiently within the first couple of days playing, it's really not that difficult.

As others have said using the obelisks (Red=NW, Green=SW, Blue = E) and the sun isn't too bad. I learned first by following the coast, eventually you learn how big certain things are in game compared to the map, and eventually through playing you'll get to know the map off by heart anyways. Flying high and looking down from a flying mount will make it especially easy to read the map.

On our server some of us put signs down occasionally with the coordinates just in case anybody stumbles upon them lost, and they've been extremely helpful to new/lost players apparently.

if you open up your map, press p and you can place up to 5 markers
