At Home Lan Server???
Is it possible or can I request a way to just connect two computers on a lan server at home, without the need to start a dedicated server or have to muck around with files and stuff. You know how on minecraft you just open to lan? Why isn't this an option? Please and Thanks. :)

I think that should be a top request. It's a multiplayer game... I want to sit at home with my girlfriend and play just us on the lan. there is a lan option in the server menu but no way to start a lan

Not at them momment sadly, you have to set up the server but not like the one that you have to install the game thru SteamCMD.

You will need SteamCMD to keep your Lan up to date but that is it.

Do you need the bat. file info that I use to run my Lan?
I wont mind pasting it for you here if you like.

It is just the bat. file that gets dropped inside ARK\ShooterGame\Binaries\Win64

And with that bat. file is how you start your server.
But again it is only the bat. file section that you need to do and not the entire install of the
game for the lan to work.

As a side note, I believe that the Dev's made some comments in E3 about working on
some kind of Co-op or something for single players. But don't quote me on it lol.
I don't have the full details on it atm.

Hope this helps, let me know if you want the bat. file info.

Just host your server from the game menu. Then make a desktop shortcut to the shootergame.exe and start your client from that (steam says game already running if you try to start the game a second time from the steam list). The other person joins from the LAN server list.

It can take 5-10 minutes to load the server. Just open task manager and wait until shootergame gets to around 2.5 GB and it should then show up in the LAN tab.

I play this way every day with a family member.

easy
  • open two ports
  • create a small *.bat file
  • open it and wait some minutes

Start ark and search for your Server in "LAN"

this helps:

Amazing! Thank you for posting this!

There is also a program called Ark Server manager that is essentially a user interface for setting up a LAN/server game. It is for those people that do not want to use a batch file to launch their games.

Getting ASM setup seems like it's an extensive hassle.
Is that not the case?

ASM is/was awesome when I used it. I am just coming back for Valguero. I highly recommend ASM (get the stand alone file if you want to play Valguero.)

Definetely worth the time and far easier than changing/writing code in the config files yourself.

You can play with someone else vbia LAN at home, but you will be tethered to the host.

Correct. It's not the case. [/quote]

...True. I didn't phrase that well.
I guess I'll give it a try.
I was really hoping I'd manage to just use the dedicated server over LAN, I don't mind writing /bat files and configuring .ini's
But it just isn't straight forward.

However, having a tether at all... ah well.

Does it require a massive download/additional copy of the game on your HDD?

If you cannot press "install" I guess you might consider it difficult. :steammocking: Every option is in a graphical user interface, all you have to do is be able to read and put a checkmark in a box or change a number.

ASM is just a few hundred MB. The dedicated server itself is less than 10GB.
