ARK is not real life people.... Imagine that
Reading posts people put on here comparing thing to real life... And how things work

Example... I was reading these two guys argument on how grenades affect metal in real life so they can explain how they worked in the game... And all I was thinking was back in my day when i was trapped on an island trying to survive with my pet T-Rex and Dodo companion was how im going to get electricity to power my machine gun to tear apart a spino in this glass house they call metal... Please anyone tell me more about when you lived with dinosaurs and fabricated your first assault rifle to save the world against the Broodmother

So this goes out to the 2 guys in the army playing a video game ARK, or anyone for that matter to never compare this to real life

Thank you,

People are always gonna use the "in real life" exuse.

"In real life i would wake up if someone was raiding my base"
"In real life a grenade wouldent damage a metal wall"
"In real life bla bla bla"

Everyone is using it, Get used to it.

Would you like the ocean to be made of caramel? How about when it rains, instead of water come down it's magical lava that restores your hunger? Yes, the game has and must have some abstractions and the theme relies on fictional content but for any of that to be an enjoyable or anything like a "survival " experience most other things in the world should at least somewhat make sense using the real world as a model.

A bit reality, sometimes more, sometimes less, is never wrong in Games.

Especially if you want people to interact with your game world in rational and inventive ways. If you want cliffs to be a legitimate threat then you must have some working fall damage system which establishes a number of working principles from the fact that bones break upon impact to gravity existing in a similar way to the real world. If bullets are a danger to player than high velocity impacts are an issue, etc. etc. etc. All these mechanics are necessary and more or less rational abstractions that encourage people in the game to behave similarly to how a person would act in the real world. Introducing a fictional element like dinosaurs to an otherwise rationally working universe is what creates the flavor fo the theme. The more you pervert the basic functionings of the game "reality" the less authentic the experience will feel. At a certain point why not make all player characters stick figures or introduce other potentially fun but thematically anathema elements? It can be done but the game then quickly loses any claim to the survival genre.

OK OP, if they want to have a discourse on the mechanics of grenades... what basis are they supposed to work from then?

Instead of denigrating them for using some grey matter, try using some of your own.

In real life there's no living dinos
In real life there's no alien obelisks
In real life there's no living dodos
In real life, you can't carry 250 stones on your back and then sprint and jump
In real life, you can't carry 136 stone arrows and 5 sets of armor
In real life, you die if you overfeed
In real life, you can't hydrate yourself by drinking salt water
In real life, you can place a smithy or a fabrictor or a mortar or whatever on the ground, you don't need some sort of foundation
In real life, meat doesnt spoil in 9 mins and 59 seconds
One of my favourite: in real life, spoiled meat doesnt spoil AGAIN.

The list goes on almost indefinitely, I think we can safely say that "In real life" is a stupid argument to bring in a game.

lol this pisses me off too, but it mostly comes from idiots who don't have the damn slightest clue about how to make a video game fun. They just think that everything should be "more realistic!" as if somehow that encapsulates everything great about every good game ever... or they think they sound clever by saying "realistic" with every sentence. I'm completely with OP in saying that it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying, but people will not stop doing it!
Vandragorax Jul 8, 2015 @ 8:58am
Usually what people really mean when they say a video game feature should be "realistic" is that it should be "Identifiable". Or in other words, they want it to feel familiar based on their experiences in the current world around them. This concept can be applied to many areas of video game design in order to maximise the amount of intuitiveness that comes through in the game's features.

heh, just commented on someone talking about real life and building thatch structures, it made me laugh cause we'd build little thatch structures when camping (Real camping not this phoney RV / Tent in a premade campsites) and how much stuff we would have to gather up just to make it.

But yeah, people will always compare things to real life as it makes them feel justified about their argument to how its 'broken' in game. Tell ya if survival games were like real life, I wouldn't play them, I'd go out and experience it for myself instead, cause nothing beats the real life experience.

I like survival games because they are a 'break from reality'. Please keep them that way.
