- Make sure they are not damaged, if they just got done fighting something you will likely kill them.
- Only do Headshots, this reduces the number of shots required thus reducing the amount of damage they take. Argentavis will charge directly at you, and you can use that to your advantage in order to get headshots on them.
- Alternately you could try using a scorpion (haven't tried this myself yet), but since it isn't a ranged weapon I don't think this gets the damage bonus that the arrows do, so it may be easy to tranq one without killing it this way.
Recommendable strategy is not trying to hit their head, as the regular damage from armor is doubled or tripled there. Also, don't overshoot them. The narcotic effect of tranq arrows is a DoT effect. Try to leave a couple of seconds between shots. You might need less arrows than you think.
I wouldn't fix it, because it makes higher level dinos also harder to knock unconscious, which I personally consider a good thing.
I think you got that confused the other way around.
You might end up not killing them with tranq but startimg effectivity will be very low
Starting taming effectivity is not influenced at all by the health they have.
only problem is there's no way to see there health, so you'll need some luck to find one that is full hp
PS. i knew that would come after ppl crying about them being to OP, now they will cry cause they die to fast.
Exactly, Headshots increase damage, but torpor amount is flat and not influenced by hitzone. Hitting the head makes the matter worse.
Also what Sperber said, wait between shots for torpor to tick up, I´m not sure how long it is for arrows but between Scorp hits its generally advised to wait 10 seconds to let the torpor tick up. Torpor will not stack up (as in, multiple shots in a short period will not increase the torpor gain). Multiple shots just renew the timer of the "DoT" while doing damage anyway.
Thats odd then we knocked out a level 45 argent with 50/550hp left. Did start with raw prime meat @ 74% effectivity
Not quite correct.
Taming effectiveness also goes down fast when the animal takes damage while it's unconscsious. It can happen that if you rapidfire it with tranq arrows, that it falls unconscious while another arrow is still in flight. If that hits, you get a pretty hefty drop in the initial tamin effectiveness.
I've always gotten better starting values to begin with, when I've took my time with shooting the arrows.
p.s. lvl 34 is not perfect look for a lvl 55-58 :) they are epic
