Stone and wooden (pillars) foundations not always being recognized by walls.
Pillars should count as foundations in all instances according to what I've read about building mechanics. I've thoroughly tested wooden pillars in this way and have had little or no issues with them, until now. For some reason stone and wooden pillars do not always work as they should. I have some screen shots to share on this. I have not yet tested metal. Anyone else having trouble with this?

Are they "locked" on ("snapped" on) to the ceilings they're underneath, or are they just placed somewhat arbitrarily?

They're snapped.

I have the same issue. I am building a substantial bridge and have done a lot of work on it. I will certainly be quite angry if this issue is not fixed and I have to abandon the project. Its not like I am an admin that can just spawn this stuff in, it look a lot of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ work.

You can see where my progress stops here:

This is the terrain that is causing me the issue:

As you can see I have been able to build most of my bridge:

I have also failed to use a wooden pillar as a foundation snapped from an ceiling. Then suddenly a friend claimed he was able to and I wondered: WTF, I tried that earlier and it didn't work! Then demolished his wooden pillar which was sticking way less through the ceiling than the ones I placed and found the magic:
If you are too close, you get a snap point that sticks roughly 15cm through the ceiling. When you move further away you get a new snap point, it's still poking ~3-5cm through the ceiling, but this new snapped wooden pillar will confidently build a new foundation and allows to build long ramps and bridges. At least that is our experience with these.

I hope I will remember to upload a picture of our "ramp 2.0". 1.0 was build from top to bottom using manually placed pillars to hold a ceiling and snap 2-3 ramps, the new one is build from bottom to top using ceiling/wall combinations and ceiling snapped wooden foundations.

@Applerus's and Caesar's pictures:
Your images show the pillars sticking more through ceiling (the one I described with roughly 15cm), believe me there is a lower snap point. And imho. that one is magic!

It has more to do with the terrain under where the last pillar has to snap to the ground.
Some GFX is ..propped..on the land surface layer, which sometimes makes it bigger then a pillar goes deep.
When i was building my bridge i had the same as De Kus..i wasent able to place certain pillars, but a friend could and viceversa..strange stuff.

Thanks for the info, I'll give it a try.

Here the ramp 2.0 as promised:

Theoretically a bridge should be possible to build similar with only ceilings and no wall steps. Import for the ramp that you set your 2nd ceiling on the floor below the one you want to go down with the pillar, else you need use a flier very early already to place the start of pillars. As soon you have 2 ceilings, you can "aim" at the end of the cliff you want to reach and verify whether you are good or need to move the starting foundation.

The magical lower snap point did work.
