I BELIEVE: it will be curious and approach you just to observe you. You can then feed it meat without knocking it out.

So I finally ran into two Ichthyosaurs on the south-east coast and one automatically beached itself. The other was just swimming around me and when I got near it, a message appeared saying to put the food on the "0" slot. Once I placed it I could press the "E" button and I would feed it until full. A message will then tell you that you can feed it once it's hungry again. I ended up taming it and I named it "Dolphin" xD

But it ended up getting eaten by a megalodon 5 minutes after taming it :/
