Reverse Engineering.
I dunno if this is something that has already been discussed, but i would love to see reverse engineering on Items, wepaons, and armor. Sometimes i raid people or get supply drops full of items i don't need, but i almost always need the materials they are made out of.

I think it would be really nice to see a reverse engineering feature at a smithy or something that would allow me to destroy these items for some of the materials they are made from.

That's not reverse engineering. That's Recycling.

Reverse Engineering would be getting an item of a certain type/quality (ramshacle or better) and learn it's blueprint or something along those lines.

Both would actually be interesting mechanics for the game if implemented properly.

You could just place it, and then destroy it and you'll get 50% of the material it's made of. :)

You can't do THAT with a rifle or any other tool that could have valuable materials in it. ;)

I understand this is possible with building materials. I was being more specific about items, wepaons, and armor.

Close enough =)

Ahh, sorry. Didn't read it properly! :) You're right. It would be awesome to be able to take apart those items too.

Being able to reclaim materials from equipment would be awesome. And there's no reason we shouldn't be able to, as the game already allows us to demolish structures and get half the materials.

Even if we have to take them apart in a smithy or fabricator, it'd be worth it.

Agree with this idea.

I for one already have found enough metal pickaxes of lower quality then I use on me to want to smelt them back into ingots.
killa_kiaba 30. juni 2015 kl. 10:50
for metal tools you should be able to throw them in a forge/smeltery and melt them back down into ingots, for other stuff maybe add a new machine to deconstruct them.

Def a good idea and something I was thinking about recently.

Item Dismantling
-Should require what it was built from IE hands, Smithy or Fabricator etc
-Should lose some materials retaining 70-50% depending on current durablity
-Should not give much if any xp to avoid double dipping

When i saw the thread title I right off the bat thought about the table in rust that allows you to attempt to learn the blueprint for the item you place in it.

for those who don't know how that works:
you place the item in the table, it tells you the resources needed to atempt to learn how to make it.
there's a 30% chance the item will be destroyed.
on attempting to learn how to make it the item becomes fully damaged if you fail, and you lose all the materials it would of cost to make it.
Repaired items used on the table have a % chance to fail based off how many times its been repaired.

if you succeed you still lose all the items it takes to make it, and you lose the item, it is then replaced with a blueprint you can study and be able to make that item whenever.

If ark did that, a) they'd have to change blueprints to items you study to unlock engrams which would only work IF you have the required engrams for that item, or b) just unlock the engram on success IF you have the required engrams.

though, being able to take a item to a smithy, and break it down for a partial material set, that would be nice, but for ballancing you should only be able to get 1 material stack out of the item, and not a full stack of what the item took in the first place to make.

i.e. you stick item in smithy to break down, right click the item, select breakdown, pops up a box where you can select the material to keep, then gives you 1/2 of that material used to make the item or 1 if it only used 1, and destroys the item.
