Tribe mates and their pets show up from a good distance so you can keep tabs on your allies.
It even shows their names through rocks / trees and structures.
For fairness in PVP, Non-allied player name plates are mostly hidden so that you can't "wallhack" and see Wee Jimmy sneaking up on you through the jungle bushes.
Pretty much this.
It allows an air of stealth inthe game, and more survival immersion. However, once you're in a tribe, you can figure out where they are much easier.
Perhaps if they introduced a Tribe ally system where "ally" name-plates showed in different colours but at the same distance as your own tribe, sure.
But with the current system, if you want to go down the route of Tribe allies and participate in co-operative assaults or hunts, then it'd be best simply communicating your location via in-game voice or text. These systems are in place for this purpose I believe.
I understand your angle, but I still think protecting stealth mechanics are more important than catering to bi-Tribe scenarios.
As a suggestion for the mean time, why not colour co-ordinate yourselves?
Make a "Co-op mission" gear set and paint your Tribe in Blue and the other Tribe paint in Green. When you plan on going on a mission together, wear your "Tribe colours". This way you can identify friend from foe in the field. :)
All im asking for is maybe 5 feet away I can see your name plate. Right now I have to get right up close like 1-2 feet away. Then I have to move my screen around to find the name plate. Try doing that while someone is sprinting away from you. Its impossible.

Anyway, I think it ultimately comes down to changing the system to cater to a very specific situation (i.e wanting to know what player is running from you, even though you won't KoS anyway). More people would lose out from this system than gain from it.
But this is just my take on it! I'm neither a PVPer or a developer. :)
Maybe this could be another wonderful server config option! For example:
"PlayerNameRange = 500"
"DinoNameRange = 500"
Another way to look at it would be that if you have an easy way to tell if that player up ahead is an enemy tribe, or just another random player, less people will have to "kill first ask questions later" just to be on the safe side.
This is a very real concern for some people. Maybe if we were required to hold the spyglass with the person/dino in view for a few seconds(maybe 5-10) before the level shows it would prevent people using it to scan for sneaking players quickly with it?
