Player and Dino name plates.
I can't see them from even 3 feet away. I literally have to be right on top of them to see the name. If someone is sprinting away from me its impossible to see who it is unless I pick them up with my bird. My tribe mates however I can see just fine and from a distance.

Bump.

I believe this is intended.
Tribe mates and their pets show up from a good distance so you can keep tabs on your allies.
It even shows their names through rocks / trees and structures.

For fairness in PVP, Non-allied player name plates are mostly hidden so that you can't "wallhack" and see Wee Jimmy sneaking up on you through the jungle bushes.

Pretty much this.
It allows an air of stealth inthe game, and more survival immersion. However, once you're in a tribe, you can figure out where they are much easier.

I get that but 5-10 feet away. And not blocked by any objects I should be able to tell who you are. 1 foot away is just not possible for PVP. 2 allied tribes attacking another tribe would be impossible. I myself don't PVP too much because I don't want to attack a player from a friendly tribe by accident. In my opinion, the way it is hurts PVP more than it helps. The only people killing are the people that just kill anyone for the hell of it and offline raiders.

I am 100% co-operative and never play on PVP servers, but I still think this is fair.
Perhaps if they introduced a Tribe ally system where "ally" name-plates showed in different colours but at the same distance as your own tribe, sure.

But with the current system, if you want to go down the route of Tribe allies and participate in co-operative assaults or hunts, then it'd be best simply communicating your location via in-game voice or text. These systems are in place for this purpose I believe.

I understand your angle, but I still think protecting stealth mechanics are more important than catering to bi-Tribe scenarios.

As a suggestion for the mean time, why not colour co-ordinate yourselves?
Make a "Co-op mission" gear set and paint your Tribe in Blue and the other Tribe paint in Green. When you plan on going on a mission together, wear your "Tribe colours". This way you can identify friend from foe in the field. :)

OK, how do you know who your attacking? My tribe does not KOS. We are actually pretty nice compared to other tribes. However we do want to be able to the KOS some people that are griefers and offline raiders and stuff. Its just not possible to tell who people are. Everyone wears the same armor sets for the most part.

All im asking for is maybe 5 feet away I can see your name plate. Right now I have to get right up close like 1-2 feet away. Then I have to move my screen around to find the name plate. Try doing that while someone is sprinting away from you. Its impossible.

My recommendation for this was for them to have the spyglass reveal the nameplate/level of a dino/player viewed through it. This would make the spyglass actually useful, instead of just being "that thing you need in order to make a scope later".

I am fine with having the spyglass reveal names. But they also need to make the spyglass usable on mounts for it to work.

I use the spyglass for scouting Dinos to tame. For example, when I want to see what colour a raptor is before going near it. But that's just me.

Anyway, I think it ultimately comes down to changing the system to cater to a very specific situation (i.e wanting to know what player is running from you, even though you won't KoS anyway). More people would lose out from this system than gain from it.

But this is just my take on it! I'm neither a PVPer or a developer. :)
Maybe this could be another wonderful server config option! For example:

"PlayerNameRange = 500"
"DinoNameRange = 500"

Wouldn't you like to know what level that dino is too? That way you aren't wasting time chasing low level dinos?

Another way to look at it would be that if you have an easy way to tell if that player up ahead is an enemy tribe, or just another random player, less people will have to "kill first ask questions later" just to be on the safe side.

This is a very real concern for some people. Maybe if we were required to hold the spyglass with the person/dino in view for a few seconds(maybe 5-10) before the level shows it would prevent people using it to scan for sneaking players quickly with it?

I wouldn't mind being able to see at least a dino's level/gender. Before the latest update, i could see it overhead from a yard or so away. After the update, i can't even be on top of it to see the gender/level. I'm not sure if it's a configuration thing, or intended, but it's made finding out the genders/levels a lot harder for taming purposes. I play on a PVE only server, so taming is what i do a lot.
