was it inside a house?
If you leave it outside it might have been destroyed by someone.
Anyway - It should appear on the minimap when you're on the respawn screen. Sleeping Bags are one use though, beds are permanent as long as they aren't destroyed.
Keeping your stuff? Nope - Gotta run back and get your corpse within... 10 minutes or so, before it despawns.
You can store your valuable stuff at your base in containers though - Helps avoid losing your stuff due to a random ambush by a raptor or such.
Play it safe early on and stay near the spawn zones - If you die, you can run back and pick up your stuff. Later on you'll have a permanent base (or several) to respawn from, with reserve gear to help you get anything back you lost when you died...
I don't see people complaining about losing their stuff in Minecraft - It's part of the survival experience y'know...
And don't venture too far off the beach until you are ready for it. I chose the hard way on my current server - Made the trip from the beaches to an inland waterfall, deep in Raptor and T-Rex territory.
By the time I had finally managed to get enough resources and engram EXP to build a bed, I had died at least twenty times, and sprinted back and forth trying to dodge hostile dinosaurs while getting my loot.
It's part of the experience - And not one I would like to see gone.
Build a house somewhere and store your items - You'll only lose whatever you're carrying around with you.
DON'T MAKE A NEW CHARACHTER AFTER DEATH, and you are fine, just respawn
Go back to your corpse - Pick up your weapons, tools, armour and general stuff. Where's the grind in that? Unless you're expecting to be dueling with a T-rex and crafting a whole new outfit every time you lose, there isn't a "double grinding" - or any real grinding for that matter.
You spawn on a beach - build a pickaxe in seconds, get your stuff back.
You spawn at home - make whatever you want with the stuff you store, get your stuff back.
