Pteranodon + tranq arrows = immediately dead
I've tried taming a pteranodon, but whenever I am about to knock one out with tranq arrows, the first one immediately kills the pteranodon. I've tried it with 5 different animals of different levels, but the tranq arrow immediately kills the pteranodon. I tried using the normal bow and the cross bow, same result

Aim for its butt, not the head.

+1

Could also try with a slingshot. Usually, for me, 1 head shot from my crossbow ends up with a sleeping Ptera but I have wild dino resistances turned up.

One arrow won't kill it, just follow it and wait for it to land if it doesn't pass out. Slingshot there after if you've issues with it dying from arrows. I'd prob blast it once with an xbow and just slingshot for the win if the xbow doesn't put it down.
Try finding one at level 16 or higher. They can survive the arrow.

I aimed at different spots of the body, not just the head. Some of the animals were level 20+

Are you on a server or single? If you're on a server I would get the settings.

My experience, all the Pteras I've encountered will go down with one arrow from a cross bow, just go for a body shot. The only one that took two was a lvl 51 I found. And yes, a shot to the face will almost always kill the lower level birds.

dont pull the bow back as hard, release as soon as you can so the arrow does less dmg

This happens with Argentavis a lot as well. Bodyshots are where it's at with flyers.

Using a normal bow over a xbow can help as well with knocking out Pteras since you can fire an arrow without a full draw and lessen the damage. You shouldn't need a whole lot of torpor to drop a Pteradon.

I'm on singleplayer. Tried two more times, aimed for the butt and didn't pull the bow too fast, same result :(
Im on single player as well and only found this with a cross bow
using a reg bow has never killed in one shot for me

dont fully draw the bow either

Try a scorp instead, level it's damage up to around 400% or so, might have to chase it down for a few seconds but for me survival seems to be much better

Tame only 80-90+

When they're that frail, you may need to resort to the slingshot. One full-drawn headshot from a slingshot might knock it out right there. It might even kill some low leveled Pteras outright though.

Other than that, keep trying to find a Ptera that will take an arrow to the backside and not immediately die. It's better than the alternative of training a Scorpion to knock out a Ptera in one sting.
