Family Sharing Local Play
So our son really wants to play this game. I don't see the point in buying another copy of the game... this is probably the first game I've seen that you only get one character slot. I'm still new to Steam, too, so am just now learning about this family sharing thing. I know you can't do that for online servers for ARK, but what about local play? If I were to make a second Steam account for him, and I approve the 'request', would he be able to make his own character on local when logged into his account on another PC?

Also, with family share - can both accounts be playing the same game at the same time?

It works fine with unofficial servers, just not official.

The family sharing doesn't work on official servers, but you can still play unofficial servers and single player.

No, you cannot play the same game at the same time. If the original owner is playing anything at all, then the account with the shared library cannot play any shared game.

Family sharing is disabled for Ark official servers. You can have multiple chars on different servers btw.
Only other option is to get your son a second steam and ark acount.

The only thing affected is the official servers, unofficial servers work just fine right now.

You can also set up a dedicated server yourself.

and I don't think family share accounts can play the game at the same time unfortunately

but for the ~$25 this game costs, it is really a deal when you consider that 2 copies of this game would still cost less than a AA title these days.

I don't know if this game has support to family sharing but only one person can have access to the account each time. It doesn't matter what game you are playing, if your son wants to play ARK sharing from your account and you decide to play CSGO, he won't be able to play ARK anymore.

Wish I'd looked for these answers before I went through the rigamarole of getting my son set up so he could play. Since I am playing single player when he logs in with his account and tries playing single player he loads my character.

You could probably back up your world and save to another folder and swap them when he wants to play? Haven't tried it myself but it should work. Just an idea.

Thanks guys! I've been wanting to contact Steam about moving his games (he's been playing Gmod and stuff a long time, I only recently started getting and playing Steam games and did so on the same account grrr) to a new account I make for him.... but kinda figure they'll not do it.
