Also why bother they respawn. Weight will have you return with more.
Mammoths have a base damage of 40, pretty solid health pools and good resistances. While the obvious leveling path for a mammoth is as a beast of burden, a war mammoth can kick some seriously rear end if you focus health and melee.
Also, tame a few Dimorphodons and let them follow your mammoths. Dimo's are excelent little escorts.
My lvl 200 mammoth with 1200% melee gets around 40-45 wood per tree (on official server with rate x1)
I usually put following the mammoth 2-3 high lvl phiomias with weight upgraded, and I don't need to waste points in that.
Don't think it's true, I've never heard anything about it even being considered either and the removal would screw over a large number of already leveled dinos. I find it highly unlikely unless some massive change was being made like a new harvesting specific stat or something being added.
They haven't explicitly stated they are going to get rid of it, but they have implied that they might:

Anyway thanks for the answers all, so it's worth it after all. Especially if you got a mule following you.
However, if they change that, then the damage stat quickly becomes useless. I hope we can re-allocate our dino stats then.
The same would apply to your characters melee damage, you would also need a stat reallocation there if they hardcap it. Because, that is the only reason really to ever put points in the melee stat for your character I suppose.
When they did this they stated that they were reverting the "bug fix" until they can come up with better per dino harvest rates.
I ended up with 10k+ chitin, 3k+ oil, and 1.5k+ pearls in a relatively short amount of time.
From what I'm reading over-damage bonus materials are in a weird state. I've read that you gain more resources by using a normal metal pick axe / hatchet than compared to using a ramshackle, apprentice, journyman, or mastercraft one. My friend on the server I play on says he gets way more metal per node with his 500% melee ankylo than his 1000% melee one .. i could test this but have been busy farming caves.
Also what the OP stated about the wasp vs mammoth ... if thats true then the devs should really look into changing the path the small critters on the island use when attacking something so they can be hit on occassion. It doesn't make any sense for them to leave it as in when the game gets released and will end up with many legit upset players.
Shooting a wasp with a bow without crosshair wasn't doable. Yes I do feel this needs to be looked at because I was kinda sad.
However, this only applies to mammoths w/o saddles. If you got a saddle you can jump on the mammoth and kill the wasp by hand if it's not too high level.
I must note that players can do the same. Trykes and stegos have a pretty large aoe/knockback and are capable on even the lowest level (when saddled) to kill almost any other dino, or groups of dinos without taking a single hit. You just gotta time it right and have low ping. Doesn't work vs other stego's or vs bronotos.
I used this to kill lvl 100+ giga's and such with a low lvl crappy tryke for massive xp
