Or honestly might just be worth it to wait for elevators
Okay, I'll try the pillar w/ ceiling. Just a pillar didn't do it, can confirm.
speaking from experiance...its a ♥♥♥♥♥. you will have to keep going from teh ground up and then the top down---and even then sometimes stuff just doesn't want to match up. this was the best i could do at the time.
now...i am waiting for elevators, lol
Yeah, that doesn't work. Just tried it; ceiling under ramp by about 1 foot. No dice.
1) Build a foundation at the base of where you want the top of the ramp to be, or maybe just off the cliff edge (you can fill in any gaps with platforms later).
2) Build pillars up to the top where the ramp should start it, and cap it with a ceiling/roof.
3) Back at the initial foundation, attach a ceiling to the lowest pillar you can, then just build that out across the ground in the direction you want the ramp to go. You can use single pillars to keep it tethered so this thing can extend as far as you like.
4) Now you can build the ramp to any length you want from up top; the chain of ceilings/pillars below will count as the foundation.
Here is to hoping we get a building overhaul sometime in the near future. Easily one of the worst features of the game right now if you ask me.
Anyway, here is how i've done my down the cliff by red obelisk.

This is actually correct, but the pillar w/ ceiling must be attached to the ramp at some point, even if it's very far away (this defies physics, so you know you're on teh right track).
R = ramp P = pillar C = ceiling A = air

You can make the ramp as long as you want using this method; it just looks funny because you end up with a huge open space between the beginning pillar and where the ramp meets the ground.
*edit* argh it deleted my spaces
