I'm pretty sure the sides of mountains are not flat, but I do land there with space frequently. Sometimes I can't even reach my bird from where I ended up.
Usually if I don't land, the game is lagged and I'll rubberband and find myself next to my building instead of over it and it will still fly down and I jump off if I don't press anything to move/abort landing.
Simply changing "E" to another keybind is not the answer.
