if you hit the wings, the arrow does not count as a hit, you have to hit the body of it or pref the head as it is landing

You might not be hitting the right part of their hitbox, more than once i've shot a pteradon in the head and it walked by like it was nothing- arrow still poking into it's head.

I find aiming for the wings gets it done most of the time.

Usuall 1 tranq arrow from a primitive bow is enough to bring any but the highest level ptera to the ground, I have ( too many) pteras from lv50 to lev 200 now and never have needed more than two arrows.
Are you on a server with increased dino resistance ?

To be safe, aim for the body.
Ecktos Aug 26, 2015 @ 6:48am
Normally 1 tranq arrow to the body will take one down, a higher level ptera may need a couple or more.

Pteradons? 1 Shot to the head while it's walking on the ground and wait from 1 to 3 seconds until it sleeps.

I tamed like 8 Pteras the last days and always 1 Shot to the head. Crossbow with ~170%.

Careful with the headshots. If they are low level you can kill them. I have one shot many of them with my crossbow trying to knock them out lol.

In my experience knocking out a petra takes between 1-2 tranq arrows. A headshot will sometimes kill a low level petra in 1 hit, 2 arrows in the chest might kill him aswell depending on his hp/torpor.

Best tactic I use is wait for one to land, then walk up to him nice and close and fire 1 arrow into his chest or back. Immedietly get your 2nd arrow loaded and ready to fire. It takes about 4 seconds for the tranqualizer to take full effect and he might fall from the sky shortly after take off. If after 4 seconds he hasnt dropped fire the second shot.

I can confirm that hitting them in the wings doesnt seem to effect them at all.

I use the primitive bow as they have pretty low hp and its easy to 1 shot them with the crossbow. You can ofc knock out petras with the crossbow, but I find your more likely to accidently kill them :)

I only tame 100+ dinos when I'm not needing them for eggs. And I can assure you that 1 headshot will tranq them instead of killing (You might need to check first if he's already bloody (hurt)).

does pulling back the string matter?

Yes. The torpor effect scales with the damage.
