The issue is being solved by decay, siege platforms and ppl that care about the looks of a server landscape.
Truth be told, i would rather a few random events every month that implements an ai hunter or group of them to attack the most powerful bases. It would keep them on their toes. The name, THE MISSING LINK, could also be one where you would have to follow an underwater trail to track an ai mob before nightfall (its strongests) and find its underwater residence. The incentive is that it would have a bloodlust for your tamed pets during the night until you kill it. Killing said creature would provide you with uncraftable gear that allows you to swim faster or breath longer underwater, or a piece of it vocal cord to emulate its shrieks, to ward off underwater predators.
