Constantly redownloading the map from a server would be woefully slow and cause all kinda lag when moving.
There is also a program called Compact GUI that can help with game sizes by compressing their files; I've done it for a few games already. Can see anywhere from 10% filesize decrease to 50% as well as options for the amount you want to optimize/compress.
Side note: Doing this for ARK takes a hot minute depending on the options you choose since there is still a lot of files I can speak from personal experience.
Not much use in single-player, doing that.
I have no idea why the devs are refusing to compress the files like most any other game does for the last 20 years instead of just basically raw files like it is now.
I understand it for the devkit or internal. But for the consumer this should NOT be raw files.
On faster pc's it doesn't matter and just saves space.
On slower pc's which are more likely to have a HDD or just any HDD user it'll also improve load times by a bit.
However much I like the game. This is just negligence that you don't see pretty much anywhere else.
For ARK this is pretty much a 50-70% size decrease depending on what compression you pick.
Most games are around 10% if not less due to them already having been compressed decently.
Go into your steam library.
Right Click Ark in your library and select properties.
Go to the DLC tab and then untick any dlc you do not want to be active for download.
If you already have the dlc's installed, you may need to then go into your ark files on your comp and delete the dlc's from their folder too.
