Well what colors are you trying to use?
There are several colors that are similar, some brighter than others.

Like the regular White, and then the shiny Silver
Red is pretty bright, and Brick is a bit darker but more brown (Like a red brick building)

its more the fact the colours seem transparent. most paints i have seen on other peoples dinos look like it is a think paint on the surface on the dino. when i tried it it looked more like it had a hint of colour

I've noticed that some dyes don't look incredibly bold when in the painting menu, but when you close out, the colours stand out quite strongly in reality.

But yes, there are a lot of washed out dyes, especially black which you would think would be the most popular. Not just for warpaints, but for walls etc as well.

I don't have a source, but I remember reading that Wildcard were going to play around with the transparency of some paints.

EDIT: Oh! And a lot of players are using admin commands to re-colour dinos in bold colours that they normally would not spawn in naturally. That's why you see a lot of barf-tastic, tacky, MS-paint, Rainbowsaurs...

You can also use the admin command (http://ark.gamepedia.com/Console_Commands)
to paint the dino all white or grey.

Then you get stronger colours for your warpaint and no random mixed colours where the base coat shines through.
