Playing private server offline
Thanks to the help here, I have my private dedicated server working as intended. I can launch it on my laptop and play on my desktop and my wife can join on her desktop as well.

However when I am away from home and it's just my laptop I would like to continue playing in the same ARK. I really don't want to try and host the dedicated LAN server on this laptop AND run the client off it as well.

Is there a way to login to the same ark and play it singleplayer, without having to also host a server for myself?

Thanks

copy the directory where the world + players are saved into your local ark folder.

okay so I just went into SavedARKs and copied all the content in there,

Then went to SavedARKs Local, and pasted it all. Going to test it...

Note: You will likely get better performance by running the dedicated server API and then connecting to it with the game client.

The program is badly optimized and this helps it spread the work load accross more CPU cores giving better performance :)

cool thank you. What I just tried didn't work anyways, so now I will try booting up my server and connecting.

Looks like I can't access the server through my laptop without port forwarding, even if it's a local LAN connection.

Back to the drawing board :/

I disconnected from the internet and fully disabled my Windows Firewall and AVG Antivirus. Same errors. I think the solution might be with running the game in single player, just gotta figure out exactly what files to move over.

It's fairly easy to create a dedicated server, you can get an old(ish) PC for around 150-200 bucks that will do it. You may even have an old laptop lying around with the specs to handle it. Graphics isn't an issue for the server, and all the processing can be done with a dual core 2.1 ghz really.

Mine is my old PC.
Quad core 3.11ghz processor. Overkill really but the PC would be just gathering dust otherwise.
600 series graphics card but uses the standard VGA drivers.
I have 16gb Ram in it but that's not necessary since it's only using 32% of it, so 8Gb will do fine.
500gb Sata HDD

An old keyboard and mouse that's lying around or buy a cheap pack you can pick up for about 10 bucks with Kb+mouse. Any old monitor you have, even an old CRT display will do.

Use the onboard networking adapter to link up to the internet and Ark Server Manager to manage it.

Violla! You have an Ark server that can run 24/7 if you want. ASM will shut down and update at regular intervals if you want. You only need to manually keep the mods updated if you have any installed on the server but you only need to copy the updates to the server straight from your client.

Password protect the server via ASM to make it private and only have people you want playing on it.

@TTSS You beat me to it.

I was going to suggest Ebay but also, many people are selling off old stuff cheap, just look at any second hand places. You can pick up a second hand PC for about 200 bucks at most that will handle it. You won't be able to get it new because nobody sells the parts any more, you'd probably spend a month searching to find a brand new dual core processor now.

This is what I found in 20 seconds for 125 bucks.

Another 4gb Ram and it's done.

A laptop would be even better since it has keyboard, monitor and mouse all in one.

This has all the specs needed. And it's a 'Buy it now' item for $279.

You need to build yourself a lan box, http://www.coolermaster.com/case/lan-box/haf-xb/
I did and never regretted it.
