Is there a trick to placing fence foundations in a straight line??
I am finding it real hard to place the foundations in a straight line. It will snap onto the foundation before it and go 45degrees on either side of the middle but trying to get it there is driving me up the wall lol

luck, I stopped using them and started using actual walls instead of fences.

It seems like where you stand makes a difference. Like standing on an existing fence foundation gives you more angles, while standing on the other side of where you're putting the new fence down looking towards the old foundation in a straight line was easier. Or the other way around. Just try standing in different spots compared the the old foundation and see if that helps.

The problem i have with the fence foundation is that it likes to snap at weird angles. So if you stand ontop of the previous foundation and look down to get it to snap right the move your mouse a little bit to get it to be straight or at the angle you want seems to helps me. I have placed many fence foundations that would snap at weird angles after i was careful in placing it so just trail and error (you can practice it in single player and spawn the items in your inventory so you can practice placing them outside of a Multiplayer server where resources matter.

Walk backwards away from the end of the one you'd like to attach them too Look at the end of the one placed and then down a bit while walking backwards XD

I stand on the fence post I just put down and then look the way I want to place the next one. Then I put it down and drag the end backwards into the one that's already down, once the ends touch it snaps into place and I make sure it's straight and I place it

Would be easier if they Devs just added a hot key you could hold down and it would only show you the lockable positions.

or the lockable postions your looking for for a specific placement of the foundation

Being honest, the only way I know of where it's possible to RELIABLY snap fence foundations together where you want them, is if you are lucky enough to be an admin so you can use the fly and ghost command.
Flying above them (and sometimes being able to ghost under the terrain) is the only way I know of that will allow you to be able to move exactly to that one, fickle, tiny position (which can sometimes only be found under the actual world) where it will place the "construction ghost" where you want it and snap them together properly, every time..

Even then it's a nightmare that should only be undertaken as a last resort lol. Try placing fence foundations in the snow - the "construction ghost" is 99% invisible against the snow in a lot of places which makes it pure guesswork unless you ghost under the terrain using admin commands.

However this issue is one in a long line of things that are wrong with the building system as a whole. I'm sure it will be addressed at some point, the only question is when.

The trick is to do a foundation, then wall, then foundation, then wall. You cant do it in 2 parts. It has to be done like that for the foundations to snap together.

I always have done my walls by placing all foundations to get the outline i want and to make sure it all snaps and meets up then i go back placing walls ontop

Line up the fence foundations to snap, then if you visualise a cylinder at the snap point, looking at different sides of that very small cylinder will snap the foundation to that side... so you need to move around to get the right looking angle, crouching helps. fencing in a downhill direction helps.

In the snow try doing it at night without a torch. the ghost is too hard to see in good light.

Make extra foundations.
Most of the time when you get to that one spot where you just CANT get it to run straight, putting down foundations in each position forces it to snap to the next one, once you have one going in the direction you want, demolish the others.
Time consuming and a waste of resources, but sometimes short of admin commands it's the only way to get the stupid things where you want them.
Alternatively, forget about snapping. They can be manually placed and if done right the walls still interlock properly with no gaps.

And the foundations snap together cleanly? Oh they dont? Then do it as I said.

On hills its better to start fencing from the top to the bottom, so you don't have to snap to a underground fence tip.

They snap together just fine they are just a bit tricky when going up a slope or down a slope
