Can't tame the doedicurus?
Hey all
A friend and I found a lvl 74 doedicurus so we tried to knock it out with about 90 narco arrows using two crossbows.

It would ball up then start wandering again. So we kept shooting it in the face and again it balled up. We used up all our arrows and he was still running around like nothing happened. Is this a bug?

Any help would be great. ty

I wonder this too, Doedicurus' ball function when it gets damaged is annoying, the only time I don't have issues is if I 1 shot it with a t-rex.

try using tranq darts mate. :x MUCH better. or if you have the time you could use scorp with high melee. it will still curl up. but it will also still cause torpor when hitting it. if you read about the deod.. it is majorly REDUCED. not completely negated damage. so yes. you can STILL cause torpor when its curled. although.. like i said. tranq darts are much easier. but the 120 perfect kibble tame i have was with a scorpion AFTER it curled. ran out of tranqs just like you and started using scorp. also.. make sure you arent causing unnecessary damage when trying to KO it. keep in mind that the torpor is a gain over time that doesnt stack. best to wait for that time to be up/nearly up before shooting again. this will help alot as well.

When he balls up, his health is low. And when balled up, all damage including torpor damage is reduced by 90%. But hes still awake.

It is still possible to knock him out cold when he balls up, but he won't open back up till his health recovers. Most other herbivores would try to run from you at the health level hes at when he balls up, even most the ones that try to fight back.

When he balls up, just keep hitting him with torpor inducing attacks, and he'll eventually unball and flop over out cold.

My scorp kills everything.... Including Quetzals.... Way before it gets knocked out, is its melee damage just too damn high? It's at 300% at level like 25.

Try waiting maybe 10 second between each shot
jlmaples0206 Nov 11, 2015 @ 8:42am
what diamond said.. if using scorp.. wait 10 seconds then repeat. and no mate. torpor gain is completely based on melee damage. lower melee means less torpor.

Are you remembering to wait 10 seconds between hits for the torpor to sink in? With scorpions, damage is instant, torpor takes time to take effect. Hit, retreat, wait, repeat.

they only ball twice , first time on the initial dmg , then again a second time, a couple head shots after that they drop , ive tamed probably 20 of things over a couple servers very easy tame. Hit them with a rex the first time to ge them to ball then kite then for the 2 head shots it takes to ball them again.

Crossbows cause more dmg than regular bows so the higher the dmg, the quicker it balls up. I tamed mine just fine with a normal bow.
There bugged i tryed to kill one today 10 mins with a sword to the head no death then watched it get attacked by a carno for 30 mins before the carno gave up

pretty much do this. approach the doed that you are trying to tame.. if using tranqs with cbow. shoot every 4 seconds. when it curls up. get on scorpion. hit every 10 seconds. if using scorp only. aproach.. hit every 10 seconds till its KOd. DONT stop causing torpor. its torpor gains faster than its health mate. when he curls and u stop hitting it.. you are letting it wake back up.. many people dont think about this.. ends up killing potentially great tames because they let the torpor get back to 0 while their hp is still low and wonder why they keep killing it before they knock it out :')

I must admit, having tried to ko them in the past with bows and crossbows, I don't even attempt it now without a longneck. So much easier.

and ghb. you are correct in saying crossbow does more damage. but since torpor is completely based on the damage.. more damage=more torpor. unless comparing tranq darts. as tranq darts do much less damage and more torpor

hit it with a scorp, start counting to 10, aim to hit it between 8-10 while kiting.

With a tranq arrows just aim for the head, even with a normal cross box you should be able to knock out a level 50-80 under 50 arrows.
Fogno Nov 11, 2015 @ 9:04am
Like others have said, use tranq darts. The arrows do too much damage without torporing fast enough to knock them out before they ball up. They are virtually impervious to being tranqed in that state.

I knocked out a lv68 fairly quickly with about 15 darts to the head. When I checked its health it barely took any damage at all which is why it never balled up. Cheaping out with arrows is not worth the frustration of trying to tame them without darts :P
