It is still possible to knock him out cold when he balls up, but he won't open back up till his health recovers. Most other herbivores would try to run from you at the health level hes at when he balls up, even most the ones that try to fight back.
When he balls up, just keep hitting him with torpor inducing attacks, and he'll eventually unball and flop over out cold.
My scorp kills everything.... Including Quetzals.... Way before it gets knocked out, is its melee damage just too damn high? It's at 300% at level like 25.
Are you remembering to wait 10 seconds between hits for the torpor to sink in? With scorpions, damage is instant, torpor takes time to take effect. Hit, retreat, wait, repeat.
With a tranq arrows just aim for the head, even with a normal cross box you should be able to knock out a level 50-80 under 50 arrows.
I knocked out a lv68 fairly quickly with about 15 darts to the head. When I checked its health it barely took any damage at all which is why it never balled up. Cheaping out with arrows is not worth the frustration of trying to tame them without darts :P
