Sharks...
...they seemingly just do whatever they wanna do. I'm not the only one on our server to experience this...I can set them to neutral, "don't follow" etc, come back in a couple of days and they're just gone or really far away somewhere in the ocean.

They could have been attacked by another shark, and went off to fight them. On Neutral they'll still run off to fight if attacked.

My own sharks I keep in a small little bay that is very shallow, and other sharks don't go into it. They stay in there for me.
That is why you put them into a pen. Otherwise wild sharks will attack them and they will go crazy.

Negative, my shark was parked at the end of a river in-let.

then of course it would swim away...

There are Sharks in Ark still?!
And here I thought my tamed Shark was the last of it's kind. :P
Seriously, the oceans on our server are absolutely barren, save for Coels and the occassional Itchy.

Anyway, as mentioned "Neutral" pets will defend any friendly pet or player and once the animal is dead, it will attempt to eat the corpse. (Though im not 100% sure if sharks do this).

Something to try:
Ride another aquatic pet if you have one and set it to Passive. Once this is done, get your shark to follow it. This means if your Shark does attack something or swim away, it will return back to your Passive pet. Sort of an anchor. Keep in mind though, follow commands are wiped when a server restarts so you'll need to set this back up again when you log on after a restart.

Give it a try!

Whatya mean "of course"? There wasn't anything to agro it and it was in enough water...Im not really new to this game dude...makes no sense for sharks to just take off, for no reason.

Have you been diving recently? The seas were barren on my server too, but on my latest dive down to the sea cave near herbivore island I ran into/away from a dozen sharks and the cave is guarded by a Plesi once more, so it looks like they've fixed whatever problem there was with ocean spawns.

Yeah I have a Plesi, 2 Sharks and 2 Itchys. The ocean from the South East all the way up to Carnivore Island in the north is completely barren. Might get 1 or 2 wild Plesi's at the bottom somewhere but that's about it.

I actually go oil diving on my Anky without giving any thought to danger beyond drowning. The oceans are dead.

*Gasp*... Or maybe all the sharks are on the west coast hiding from me. ;-)

If your shark is able to get into that area, a wild one can too. It's probably rare but it could happen.

I've left an Ichthy in one of those and it was attacked by a shark. I'd set it to follow a land creature if you don't want to keep it off of neutral or put into a pen.

Negative, I drove that shark into this "area'...there has never been any shark, ever to come into this area on it's own...has to be forced (if ya know what I mean).

could have been a Sarco. unless it's a server-related glitch or issue, a dino will stay where it's put unless it's attacked by something. at least in my experience. i have my base by the green spire and my 2 Megs are parked as far as possible inland in a small lagoon. i have them both on follow to my raft. i occasionally go check on them, and they have indeed been in combat because they'll be moved slightly and their health has changed but they are both still following the raft. i have seen wild Megs in there on occasion but more often than not, it's a Sarco. they attack everything and anything.

My shark would have annihilated 10 sarcos...
