How To Build A Fence
Random tips for folks needing/wanting protection from wild dinosaurs; partially in response to the Giganotosaurus but in general what I've learned living among the Alpha spawns as a solo player.

  1. Wild dinosaurs typically don't aggro you or your tamed dinosaurs unless they "see" them, or you, or watched one of you walk into a building/fenced area. The big challenge here is that all dinosaurs can clip their heads through structures to some degree letting them see what's on the other side.
  2. Wild dinosaurs don't gnaw at random buildings or fences unless they have aggroed and are actively trying to eat something. So by itself a building or fence will be ignored by stuff that can eat wood/stone unless they want something that's on the other side.
  3. On a perfectly flat level ground even large dinosaurs (Bronto/Rex, Giganotosaurus test pending) cannot step over a wall 2 high. This can vary wildly with the slope and other terrain items (rocks) that can give a leg up.

My recommended basic protection for all ground level bases is the following;

Outer Wall
- Minimum 2 high + adjustments for the terrain high enough that nothing can simply wander/step over it.

Inner Wall
- High enough that none of your tamed dinosaurs are visible by anything walking by (typically 5 high on flat terrain) Also set this inner wall far enough in from the outer wall so that anything that gets stuck wandering on the outer wall can’t clip it’s head through the inner wall (typically 2-4 foundations)

Personally, my inner wall and base is all metal as I’m on a PvP server but stone should be doable on PvE as long as you have the situational awareness to not drag something that eats stone home by accident and be careful opening up the front door. Building large barns that completely hide your dinosaurs vs. letting them wander around an open “yard” will also help.

Remember kids, when you start to lag out this is why, you should have asked for behemoth walls but no, you wanted to nerf gates.

I'm a pretty big proponent of small footprint bases with limited wasted space. So I don't have this issue personally

I have to revamp my base, when Quetzals were introduced spawning algorithm changed and dinos started spawning on top of my Plateau. Got any ideas on how to get things to stop spawning? My base is the south western Plateau, Weathertop, by the red/orange obelisk.

to add:

Rex and Spino can indeed walk over 2 high walls. Spino can sometimes glitch over three high, if you're persistent. Bronto's can walk right over three high walls; so, 4 tiles high is recommended.

unsure about the new Godzilla though, it very well may be able to get over 4 tall. hope not.

A player ridden Beelzebufo can jump over 4 high, recommendations were mainly around wild dinosaurs in "wander" mode but yes there are exceptions, it also does not take much of a slope to make a difference.

On one of my bases I get by with a 2 high as it's on the crest of a hill with all land outside the walls sloping downwards slightly.

Another is on a sharp slope and I needed to make the outer 5 high to keep Brontos from "wandering" in.

Good suggestions and tips. Depending on the server you are on. I would recommend people build your "main" building/pen on a full set of metal pillars. The pillars cannot be destroyed by any dino (yet? And with only 2 to 3 high, no npc dinos will be able to climb up into your base. You then build walls on the edge of your "floor" just to be safe and keep eyes off of your stuff. Then, for those that do not know pillars leave 4 outer tiles when built. So when you interlock a ton of pillar tiles. You get an odd on sticking out past your walls. So you put a plant species x here and you will have a full 360 degree protection from multiple angles. Then, if you want. You can make a perimeter fence out of something cheaper like stone or even wood. Should something decide to break in. It gets shot in the face by a ton of plants. NOTHING on pve can survive or get past this design....so far. Will add pictures of my house after work tonight.
