Ever since its the first dino i tame when starting fresh because its simply the best choice even though you cant get a saddle untill level 20.
Craft foundations (start with thatch) and place them, if you place 2 next to each other you can replace 1 of them over and over again with a new one untill you get enough level to make wooden foundations. Rince and repeat the process while you explore, destroy the foundations when you move on to get the same refund as replacing them and you should be lvl 15-20 before you know it.
Its not that dilo's are bad, there quite fun and when you get good level once as mentioned they are rather powerfull (even against alpha raptors if you have a good pack). The big plus of a Trike is its carry weight, witch if you are going to explore is a almost a must have. I dont know any better mounts that are "easy" to tame that do a better job at killing things and moving your things around then a trike tbh (stegos are cool to, but take longer to tame and higher level for the saddle as well). Its a good multi-purpose dino, witch is often found stuck on trees around the beaches (actualy often found anywhere stuck on tree's, there really loving them tree's xD).
Dilos are easy to knockout/tame and useful for the eggs later on (tame 1 male and rest female). But my first priority is always to get a male and female trike. If you have enough time, you can knockout a pair of lvl 40-80 trikes, but any level will do. The trikes dont knock down trees (unless you are close enough for them to attack you), so just get them stuck between two trees and knock them out with the slingshot. After that you start collecting berries non-stop. It´s easy enough to collect narcoberries enough to keep at least two trikes knocked out (you may also collect some narcoberries before you knock them out, just to be sure).
The advantage of the trikes are their area of attack and knockback, this makes them capable of taking down even carnos and low level alpha raptors (when you have leveled them in health and some damage - I aim for at least 5000 hp and eventually 600 dmg). Also as soon as you get to level 20 (trike saddle), they are very useful for collecting narcoberries for your future tames.
The disadvantage of the trikes is the area of effect attacks tendency to unintentionally attack herbivores in the area. So they aren´t that useful for meat hunting/exploring, since you easily end up with three brontos killing you with their tailswing. So use them cautiously :)
In general I would wait with the exploring till you get a raptor with saddle. At that point you can outrun most dangers and get to safety. When you reach lvl 35 and get the engram for the ptera saddle, you can fly all over the island to scout for the optimal base location for your future base.
Good luck with your adventures :)
also things like raptors wont switch agro to them till your dead atleast from personal experience anyway. not sure what else stays focused on the player, the bigger carnivores seem to go after wtv is between you and them when chassing you.
Raptor "capture" can be easy if you use resources. Some people do not like using resources to tame dino's.
I buid a "Tranq Shack":
4 - Thatch foundations
4-8 - Thatch doorways
4-8 - Thatch doors
4 - Thathc ceilings
You can lure any non-large size Dino to the box - it will chase you right to the box. Stand in the doorway to make sure to lure it and then back up as it bites at you. You can now stand in the center of the box and shoot tranq arrows without a worry. You will tranq it out before it destroys the Thatch.
This method work with: Raptor, Sabertooh, DireWolf, Trikes.
* Dilo's can enter in the shack.
* Open Doors stop Raptors from entering - No Door = Raptor can enter (especially if you make it 2 walls high.
The purpose of having so many "doorways" is that it allows you to stand in the middle and shoot in any direction - especially useful with wolves and saber's that like to 'circle' their target.
This makes tranqing or knocking out a creature that would normally kill you easy. No matter your level, I have used this box successfully since L12 and between L1 and L70 - have thus far died only once (Dimorphs attack the rider, not the mount - warning).
A pack of dilos can be more effective than you might think. We had a pack that could take down Alpha Raptors. Dilos are easy to tame, so no reason not to have a pack.
For other tames, build a taming pen and/or a taming tower.
For the taming pen, you build it out of walls and door frames on fence foundations, plus two regular foundations on which you put walls and ramps. You aggro what you want to tame, lead it ot the pen, run up the ramp, jump into the pen, and run out the other side. Other than diloes, raptors, sabers, trikes, carbos will all get stuck in the pen and make an easy tame for sling or bow. Until you can get dino gates, you will just need to demolish a wall or two to get your tamed prize out.
And, when you get stone tier, upgrade to stone. And, when you get dino gates, you can do a version with a dino gate enterance. I use these to tame rexes, but your walls should be at least 2 high, preferable 3.
Also, a taming pen, with high walls, also works against agrents, except you go inside of the pen and shoot out of it while the bird flies around it.
A taming tower is just some columns and ceiling tiles, plus ladders. Place the columns, 3 or 4 high, add ceilings(you may need to build a temp scafold next to it to place the first ceiling tile), and add the ladders. Then, you kit want you want to tame to the tower and shoot it from above. You can even put a small box on it and put spart mats and ammo in it.
If you are in the wood tier, after you build the tower, put a ring of columns around it. This will keep what is chasing you from getting to the tower base, keeping them out a bit, making them easier to shoot.
For both, if you use wood, make sure to repair the walls and columns between tames; and be prepared to run if things go south. You can also over build a bit by putting up a double fence around a taming pit, so if they break through the first, you still have an outer wall; but only needed for wood tier.
Even when you out grow them they are useful for eggs
I've got a farm of 20 dilos for eggs, but they also have 1k HP and 1K% attack. I'm sure they could do some heavy damage to things.
Not as well as dimophodons though, once you get them, the island runs out of threats, unless its the dodorex that thing will kill everything
We build high towers (usually wood and early on) to tame raptors, sabers, etc.. We now have 2 stone towers that rexes can't reach us..
For the longest we had 6 dilos and 2 trikes for a hunting party.. None of them died and they are still with us...(we play dangerous and hubby is real good with rocks and tranqs and they were kinda high level to begin with..we were level 6 and had two trikes that were level 100 and 102..hehe)..
The only bad thing with trikes is they LOVE to get stuck in trees when we hunt.. the dilos have a love relationship with rocks and stick their heads in them (they get stuck).. So always watch your herd...
Wood towers are your friend for taming fast dinos or mammals...then go to stone and ect..
Because you can definitely scout areas for those bigger and/or faster tames with a small pack of dilos and 2 trikes...
And we still take our dilos on hunts ....depending on what hunt we are doing..
I found that the flies and wasps and ants are best tackled by running away, then turning to face them and then backing away while jabbing at them (as are dilos). The flies dodge about and the hits are pretty random but if you keep poking at them with a spear they go down, but tend to break spears so have 2 or 3 ready.
Dilos signal their venom spit very clearly so dodging to the side is an easy way to avoid that.
Building fortitude helps reduce venom effects and health can help with surviving a wasp ambush.
2c
So, Id say, a bunch of low level dilos, and when you go for a Trike, do an effort, and go as high as you can. A good trike will be useful as personal mount and as working dino for most of the game, so getting a high level one always pays off.
Keep an eye open for stuck dinosaurs. I had my Trike at about level 8 because she was stuck on something so easy to knock her out with my catapault, took 62 narcotics and a few punches when they ran out to tame her though.
Exploring with dinos in general tip. Keep an eye on the path as you walk about and cut down the occasional tree if the gap looks a bit small for them to figure out where to go.
Dilo's for the win - love them.
I have no arthritis and still get knocked out a lot when a snake creeps up and bites me in the hindquarters. Carrying stimulants helps, but I don't always hit the button fast enough.
A slingshot and a big rock to stand on are good for knocking out your first raptor without the expense of tranq arrows.
Taming a low level trike (under 10 or so) as your first makes collecting the resources to tame a better trike much easier. It's also not nearly as much time lost if it gets killed.
