Araneo (Spider) is a waste of time.
Hey!

Love the Fear Evolved event but I gotta say, the spiders were a huge disappointment.
This thread is aimed more at those who are busting their balls trying to tame one.

I managed to tame a Level 50 Spider. It took a LOT of work, a lot of time and a lot of materials.
After I spent Engram points on the saddle and popped it on the little bugger, I realized just how poor a pet it is.

Not only did it have a measly ~400 hp and ~230% melee damage but it's carry weight was around 98 and it's Stamina was around 190.
This means that it could hardly hold me even with a small inventory and it ran out of stamina within about 9 seconds of sprinting. I almost lost it trying to fight a level 13 Dilo.

I chalked it down to being low levelled and having poor RNG stat distrubution so when my Brother found a level 100 Spider, I decided to give it another shot. I got it half way through taming it in my Bronto Taming Arena before it u-turned and bumped into me, causing it to agro.
I managed to get it to calm down and when I resumed, the "Wait Until It's Hungry Again" message wouldn't change and it's health sank until it died.

So!
This isn't a b*tchig thread at Wildcard, just simply a "You're not missing out on anything" Thread to those who are still breaking their backs trying to tame a Spider.
It's a waste of time and materials, it's unlikely you will ever use it and it's a waste of 18 Engram points to learn the saddle.

Wait until the Spider has received a bit of love (and a better taming method) before you go for one. :)

Happy Arking!

Oh! And I've found that it's Alt Attack (Web Spit) does very little against wild dinos.

The tame is tedious and useless indeed. All tribemembers wanna do is squirt in my face now =\

The onyc however is easily done in a cave near volcano. Just tamed a 120 bat and it has beast stats, sadly only cooked prime seems to do the trick the fastest. Could use kibble.

+1 i have yet to tame one but ive wasted enough time on one, when i do get beyond halfway it runs outta food and its tame bar resets, then when that happens a bug happens and it loses health and not huner so it pretty much dies.

thanks for saving me time >.>

How'd you get a bat?

Passive tames to me are really, really stupid.

Yeah, I think "Effort : Reward" Definitely needs looked at. As the Spider is currently, it should take no more time than an Icthy. Less even. The spiders are completely expendable.

I get it that they were more of a gimick for Halloween. That's cool. But if they are to have a long-term part in Ark's tamable list - then they need a serious buff!

+1 I agree. Even taming a low level on is tedious at best. I thought the point of the bug repellant was so that it wouldn't agro which I thought was really cool. It didn't work quite the way I thought it should. I think it would be better if it blinded the spider or made you invisable to it so that it couldn't agro you as you were taming it. That would have made more sense at least to me.

I got lucky and tamed my spider the easy way.

I was making a cage for it, but it glitched into the foundation. It stopped moving and aggroing so I sat behind it the whole time spamming E. It was still pretty slow even at 10 seconds a pop.

Bug spray not even once.

So is the only reason to tame it now is for people who didn't kill it before the update to get the dossier?
I tamed a lvl 120 on our server (2.5x taming speed) and it was extremely disappointing. Even the webbing is terrible on a tamed spider vs a wild one (wild ones have range, tamed ones have to be point blank and don't work half the time).

I see them being more useful as defensive emplacements, or turrets if you will, trapped in boxes with plenty of vision than as mounts. Web turrets ftw.

That would be nice if their webbing had a range farther than 1 inch.

I would hope that it gets a range buff, agreed.
