For herbivores, you'll just have to scour. Brontos are the rarest, but I have about 5 Stego costumes. Trikes are middle-ground. Skeletal Stegos can be hard to spot since the general outline from a distance makes them look just like a regular, but keep searching. It is a pain, but if you have admin priviledges, spawn them in.
I do too, however their really is an issue with the passive taming for the bats and spiders. :( Maybe because I have been wanting spiders and bats for so long that I am bit more frustrated than I normally be, but I never had this much trouble with the giant apes.
Try it again.
This time, build another row of walls on top all around.
When you've done that, find out which wall it's attacking and replace it with a fresh wall.
Apes do the same thing and this works to drop their aggro.
If you don't build a second level of walls, it maintains line of sight and never loses aggro.
If you don't replace the wall before it's broken, he'll see you and aggro another wall or you if he gets out.
Edit : Just want to state that I don't know if this works the same on spiders/bats. This is just my experience from the same problem with apes.
Yeah, taming the bats is pretty annoying. I personally hate spiders and want no part in them so I haven't really attempted timing one. Ugh, spiders.... *shudders*
I have never had issues with apes :/ These spiders are a whole new story :(

feel free to add your own opinions. Over all, the even failed, but it didn't have to. It's very sad to see some amazing ideas be wasted by poor execution.
the complaints in this and other threads are not about BUGS, these are intentional choices the developers have made.
and they are utterly useless to every single casual playing player they have. They think this game is a MMO played only by huge tribes.
I would think with the numbers this game has playing that a lot more of the people hate the direction the developers are going with time sinks and hardship more then enjoy it, and a lot less are from huge tribes that it seems to be made for, of course I don't have ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stats who knows.
I know for my personal server, I'm making a minecraft "wanna be" mod to remove a lot of these time sinks.
Normally i'd stay out of these discussions, being on a private server with a very low population ( about a dozen people, only two of which are online at any given time, myself included.)
But.... you want more events where 95% of the content is off-limits, locked, or flat out annoying enough to turn off everyone playing it?
None of us feel like cheesing a kill off a dodorex, so that's out. Passive taming a bat? Huge laugh there. Skeletal dinos being rare, and costume drops rarer (unless you're me. 100% drop, only lost one costume due to internet crapping out).
I play this game to have fun (which admittedly, is most of the time. No naysaying here), but at the same time, i'd like to experience the content available, you know?
* Dodorex. I could never kill it alone even if it was possible for me to find it alone. I like the shadow on the moon though, adds a bit of spooky atmosphere.
* Spiders and bats. Not sure what I think there, on the fence all I have done so far is kill a spider or two.
* I have pumpkins, scarecrows and gravestones all of which are very common and got boring but ignorable after 15 minutes or so. I could move them and carve the pumpkin if I wanted to but that would take 30 minutes or so I suppose. Harmless.
* Skins. Might be cool in MP but Alphas are more something to defend against than go looking for in SP. Nice that the Alphas got a makeover but no skins for me I think.
* Zombie Dodos. Funny.
* Candy Corn drops. Eye candy, halloween stuff in them would have been nice or maybe I am just unlucky but I did stop hunting for them pretty quick.
