Alphas - Tameable? Killable?
It just so happened that both an Alpha Raptor and Alpha Carno have spawned outside the perimeter of my base, been there for days ruining my plans to do anythign in the area. I had a level 20 Spino that I tried against the Raptor, but the Raptor got under its legs and destroyed it too quickly. Was a big disappointment. So what's the deal with Alphas, are they invincible - not worth messign with? If not, what's the most effective way to take them down if you're around lvl 50? Are they even tameable? I had several Stoen structures get demolished by these guys... is Metal the way to go to endur an Alpha attack?

Thanks

Last time I killed an aplha rex was before I have taken a break from Ark.

Anyway as far as I remember I used a Trike, 3-4K HP, 400% Damage and a Stego, similar HP and Damage. The Stego and my tribemate died. Maybe the Stego is the wrong beast to beat them. Maybe Trike is better.

I think there´s a mod that makes Alphas tameable. Anyway, I´d never face an alpha without a bunch of dinos to back me up and me riding one of them. Of course it depends on your dinos levels, their stats and the level of the alpha. Here are some additional informations about their stats, so that you can figure when you might be ready to face them.

The only time I had to fight an alpha dinosaur without the help of half a dino army was when I was exploring the colder regions and got surprised by an alpha raptor Lv.20. Fortunatelly I had 4 Sarcos (Lv.30+) with me so we were victorious. Just make sure you ride a dinosaur. For you by yourself won´t last longer than a few seconds against the attacks of an alpha.

There are older posts in which someone was asking how to deal with alphas. Surprising someone replied that it needs only to take advantage of position, taking them in the right spot of land, and to have enough resources/ammo to kill them with just a bow. I trust that, with some practice, it could be done!!!

Other people have stated that it needs only to ride a Trike, you have, only to find the "right" pace to attack, and about this I could say it is correct, because I have taken down an alpha rex in such a way.

i know thats a joke, but im gonna say

you would need to be an admin/ have a mod
if its a vanilla console spawned dragon, you could only have on anyway, it has no AI
im pretty sure a giga would be more powerful than a dragon army XD

The first time I killed an alpha I was level 60 and it was an alpha raptor. He was too busy fighting some wild argentavis & sabbertooths, so I sniped him. Took me 15 shots with the longneck rifle to kill him (plus the damage of the wild dinos).

I don't want to use a dino against them, they are too strong. But they give so much xp and so much prime meat.

I agree, alphas can be so annoying, specially if you can't escape (ex. if you can't fly away).

I know what you mean. Pushing the alpha back with the strikes of the trike so that it can´t hit you. Should work. Haven´t tried that yet. Not really a fan of trikes, since their stamina runs out rather fast. Using the terrain to take down an alpha from safe distance is another matter. While it is possible, the chances that an alpha is just where you need him to be are not great. Most likely you´d have to lure him there one way or another. And the mere thought of an alpha hunting me while I´m on my own gives me shivers. They are damn fast.

@ Viking: Now that was a lucky scenario. But dinos can do well against alphas if they have the proper hp and are mate boosted. I´ve brought down a lot of alphas with my dinos. But I never had anything better than a crossbow, so I kind of needed them ^^

never had a problem with alphas and our server is set to difficulty 6 allways killed them alone either on my Spino that way its faster or use my Pteranodon that take some time duo landing for stamina regen.

It works, but about it can not hit you... ...ehmm... ...most of the time... ...prepare yourself to be frightening bitten some times...

I have tried, and I have done it. You have not to charge the alpha but you have to stand still and to gore it everytime he is going to attack you. Anyway sometime you will miss the right pace and will be bitten, there is a reason to have some HP spent when levelling the trike.

IMHO ptera are really useful in such a situation, to find the right spot of land where to kite the alpha without being bitten.
Best things to do:

(1)try to tame a high lvl http://ark.gamepedia.com/Gigantopithecus (ape, bigfoot, guorilla, wtv you wanna call it). Mine got tamed at lvl 60-70 and then I "trained" him by fighting a lot of stuff for 10-20 lvls. I made it a chitin helmet (as chitin is raining for me) to fight regular stuff around and I keep a flak helmet for hard fights such as alphas. 100 armor is REALLY strong on any pet but watch out as helmets can still break on pets. Oh and train it's hp (3-4k is plenty with flak helmet) and damage (mine is sitting at about 600-700% melee damage) mainly with maybe a bit of stamina but really not much is needed as apes can run and fight long without bursting through their stamina too quickly. If you can have 2-3 mate boosted apes in these conditions, GG to the alpha. Apes attacks have strong knockbacks and if correctly timed, the alpha raptors can't even attack you before it's knocked back again.

(2) make Plant X Species defences around your base. Plant them in large crop plots (1 fertilizer bag = about 6-7 days (in real life) worth of life time) sitting on top of ceilings (supported by pillars) around your base. I had to set to High Range and target everything that came into range and It REKT an ALPHA CARNO in mere seconds. Their spores attacks stunlock + applied slow (stronger version of the dilo poison) + high DPS = everything that gets close to your base gets destroyed without it being able to move more than a couple of feet toward your walls. They can even attack small targets with great precision or flyers no problems and only requires some fertelizers and water... lot less maintenance than regular turrets that you need a generator and ammo to craft for it.

i use my high lvl argent's to kill alpha rexs and my mid lvl ones for raptors and carno alphas if you are going up against raptors or carnos make sure to have around 4-6k hp and 500-1k melee

for rex's you should have around 15k hp and 1-1.5k melee and you may still need to force feed your dino meat to heal a bit before you can kil it or at least kite it to some rocks where it can get stuck and you hover over its back killing it.

but mostly you need a medium to high lvl dino and then have a lot of hp and melee damage for most alphas raptors are not to bad and can be killed rather easy at times
