GPU needed to run a server? are you kidding me?
One of my good friends is building a gaming community with a realy nice server rack hes renting. He wanted to include Ark, but when he was booting up the server it said it need "A detectable GPU"

this is going to make some people angry, and keep some people from hosting the server. I have never heard of any companies hosting server racks with a video card in them.

i hope this is a bug with the servers and not the truth.

The question is: for what?
The server needs not really a GPU...

Does anyone know why it needs a GPU for a "SERVER" ? That means server companies are going to have to step up their products JUST for ark, no other game I have ever played needed a GPU to run the server, unless it was only a listen server. And it apparently needs a gpu cause when my friend booted up his ark server, the console read "need detectable gpu" or some thing like that. I'm let down that we can't add ark to my friends gaming community. We already have a rust server running that peaks 100 players, I wanted to see if we could get that going for Ark aswell.

You don't need a GPU, I run a server just fine without one. Try using Ark Server Manager. This link will get you all setup.

The server was likely looking for a GPU for physics calculations, its not all that uncommon to offload them onto a GPU as it takes a large load off the CPU.

Mh... so how does the ark server run on my linux virtual machine without any virtual GPU setup, graphical interface and only ssh-access? Weird.

It doesn't need one, but it does help.

no, the server doesn't look for or need a gpu.

I wonder if the server was needing some direct x files installed and the person got confused and thought it was referring to a gpu. This server does need some direct x files installed that are not installed with Windows.

It's not the server itself but the software of the game that does it.

The real question is, why does everyone want to host windows server

because they are much easier to config and ark seems to have a lot of problems on linux servers like some huge memory leaks a few months ago + some bugs no one can help with occure sometimes. it's no longer a resource discussion if you want to use linux or windows. of course linux needs way less ram and so on but do you really care when most servers today have 32-128gb ram at least?

So should you, it's the same effect as having two video cards and keeping one dedicated to physx. One card handles the normal GPU processes while the other strictly handles the physics calculations.
Only a server doesn't need a output for graphics.
