Unfortunately John this doesn't really say much because the main issue with Catalyst is that for a long time there have been no specific card drivers. AMD offer the same driver and suite regardless of what card you have dating back as much as 5 years.
So with a non R9 card for example it will be very possible and i nthe case of the R9 280 which is actually a rebadged 7950 again it makes perfect sense. the 290 and beyond though are not rebadged cards they are actually all new cards and the technology used for SOME manufacturers fan control did not permit manual control in the Catalyst suite.
In short whether you could or could not is completely dependent on what card you have and who made it.
But the fact Catalyst opts to run Ark around the 79C mark with 48ish fan effeciency because these days customers prefer "quite cooling" doesn't rock my world at all.
The ability to crank it up to 60 and ease the strain on the GPU is greatly appreciated and given the volume of "Ark killed my card" posts around here this post has relevance and i wanted to share the knowledge that is all.
Unfortunately, with every new top-of-the-range GPU, AMD introduced a brand-new family with a new flagship and a bunch of rebranded products. AMD’s Radeon R9 200-series featured only one new GPU – “Hawaii”. AMD’s Radeon R9 300-series includes no new GPUs because “Fiji” is not formally a part of it. Moreover, since AMD made decision not to invest resources in lower-end GPUs, its Radeon R7 300-series is based on graphics chips released in 2012 and 2013."
____________
ya...99% of the R7-R9 200/300 cards are rebadges--the fury is the only "new" gpu, and its still built on 28nm, is named "fiji" and is not considered part of the 300 series gpu's.
basically the 79xx (28nm) became the R2xx (28nm) became the R3xx (yup...still 28nm). AMD is not being lazy, they are stuck like Nvidia because....
____________
"Because Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s 20nm manufacturing technology was designed primarily for mobile system-on-chips (i.e., for Apple), it is unsuitable for mainstream graphics processing units. As a result, both AMD and Nvidia have to significantly redevelop their roadmaps several years ago (virtually all decisions about the roadmaps were made in ~2011, four years back) in a bid to keep introducing new products, but make them using TSMC’s 28nm fabrication process. In fact, AMD and Nvidia have to offer competitive products made using the same manufacturing technology for four years: from 2012 to 2016, an unprecedented amount of time."
**quotes from KitGuru, Anton Shilov
and the new software is great news, have disliked Catalyst for so very long....
I have a Sapphire R9 290 OC Vapor-X 4GB.
my average FPS is over 50ish it can drop but never anything below 30 which is servicable for me given the fact this is a hugely ambititious game using one of the latest engines.
Optimization is an ongoing process and what i will say is the difference on how scaleable and effective modifying graphics settings on and off relative to how the game ran on launch is an absolutely HUGE improvement.
You need only check the patch notes from day 1 to see how many optimization changes have been made till now.
Aslong as your expectations are reasonable your card is not absolutely ancient and you are willing to do a fair bit of tweaking the game will run and a wide range of setups now.
One main thing you can always gain performance tweaking is shadows - how often do you actually stop to admire the crisp anti aliasing and quality of a shadow? Yet when the GPU is rendering shadows in realtime on every single object in the game the strain is huge!!! - so i always suggest lowering shadow quality first and foremost and goin from there.
By all means if you do get the game i cannot recommend it enough the devs are absolutely stellar in their transparency and frequency in which updates and content is being put out.
Should you need some more specific tips on how to squeeze out the performance by all means gimme a shout in this thread i shall keep an eye on it.
Hope this helps Chosen.
Either you love Nvidia or you are one of those people that just HAS to know more than someone else even though that person does know it just wasn't in any way necessary to talk about given the context of the post.
Thanks for all the info but I am well aware of this it was why i gave one example and then another.
Where my post goes over your head is the MANUFACTURERS DO offer new features and tech and in the case of the Vapor-X series the hybrid fan control.
When you use generic drivers instead of manufacturer specific ones (as most of us do!) you immediately lose control of anything not covered. Crimson restores fan control to those of us who have been unable to modify it on Catalyst i really do not understand why you felt compelled to post all that other than to have a pissing contest.
I am an IT professional of nearly 15 years when i post advice and knowledge it is NEVER speculation because i know all too well people like you will tear it apart. The difference between us is i get my experience from inside knowledge and practical application over 15 years not a sodding website and wiki that i quote and paste from.
Just because underlying architecture remains the same does NOT mean that the final product is not "New" - by your logic a vast majority of cars, houses, electronic appliances and various other well known catagories can never be new???
Really I am all for being informed and I will always be the first to put my hand up and say "yea my bad got that one wrong" but I cannot stand people sticking their oar in acting superior and slavering out their rear-end just so they can sound more intelligent and/or informed than they actually are.
i5 4690k 3.5Ghz = stock with a aftermarket cooler. No issues with CPU temps i really do feel Ark is more GPU intensive than CPU.
I have read plenty people citeing the very popular FX 8350 and in majority of cases the bottleneck has been a subpar GPU as opposed to the CPU - not that i rate that CPU i wont lie BUT it's fast enough to get Ark working.
ya...butthurt there much?---you are not arguing with me, but with the tech site that wrote that article, whom are much more informed than you. i was simply disemmenating information, i expressed no bias towards any brand as i own several of each.
your right tho...take a 100 year old house, give some fresh paint and its "new"....take a three year old 28nm gpu, give it a differnet name and "features"...lol...and its new...the article discussed how both Nvidia and AMD are in the same boat, which i thought you might find interesting, but whatever. I thought you were trying to have a informative thread but you're apparently just another know it all AMD fanboi that thinks every comment is someone stepping on your ♥♥♥♥.
and while we are seeing who can piss the farthest, you lack about 7 years working experience compared to me, as i started with IBM EduQuest in 1994 and have been employed in various IT/Networking positions since, have been an avid gamer since 1995 (Doom) and currently own more computer equipment than you have probably ever worked on.
thrill me...whats your main rig?
Could you not just have put that there in the first place???? There is such a massive difference in the tone of your post when you atleast acknowledge what i was doing.
Can i just stop your in your tracks so you can understand that you already have me ALL wrong. I currently own AMD but i would not SELL a current gen AMD to ANYONE unless they were literally threatening not to take my business over it.
AMD right now are so far gone i don't see how they can come back that was really the significance of getting this post out because they DID do something right!!!
Nvidia's 9xx series cards are 100% top choice right now the 970 and 980 are just unbeatable for their considered price brackets.
The speed that you got so nasty makes me wonder just how hypocritical the "stepping on your toes" part is because if you read what i said with regard to questioning WHY this was necessary in the thread and why you felt compelled to step on my own - well look how you have reacted.
Humility sir if you have 7 years in this industry over me you should know it by now and don't get pissed because i do.
ok i will humour your request.
i5 4690k
Giga Z97x SLI mobo
8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz
Sappy R9 290 OC Vapor-X
Asus Xonar DS
Windows 7
Corsair AX 760
Now i cannot wait to hear you pick those choices apart.
You may have 7 years over me but you overstepped with the "more equipment than ive worked on"
The fact is i made a comment, you went to correct it and your opening response now is "1 GPU in 3 years means others are not rebadges"
Again i stress that was not the topic. Again i state that i neither said it was or was not the case it was IRRELEVANT to the conversation and AGAIN i point out that as far as the facts i gave whether your ego can handle them are not - were correct.
Your vicious reply is indicative of that fact.
I am not some little snot nosed ♥♥♥♥ working for PC World who dare to call themselves an IT Professional.
I co-run a very successful independent PC centre and previous was in a 10 year contract as IT support and software developer for a high profile telecommuncations and e-commerce company.
I really cannot stand people like you you seem to think that no one else in the whole world can possibly be in the same industry but unlike YOU i listen to others.
My statemens are correct you are getting pissy because i asked you what your point was you are STILL rambling about how right you are - NOTHING was questioning that my question to you is what the hell does whether or not the GPU is new or not have to do with the new driver suite allowing fan control??? answer that if you really are a professional you are gonna have no choice but to say "yea point taken i just felt like going more in depth"
See what annoys me is my response did NOT dismiss your information. I didn't say it was wrong I simply said that what i said was correct and then elaborated.
TBH i don't really care anymore because one thing is obvious from your stinking attitude if you worked with customers face to face its no wonder you have between jobs you arrogant sod.
1995 Doom eh. Personally it was Wolf 3D before that i countless DOS games brought home by my dad on floppies beforehand.
Again i do not understand what you are trying to prove. Like you i like to inform but i DONT shove unwanted info down someones throat to start an argument. I get it you wanted to point out AMD have sucked for years guess what I AGREE!!!! but that was NOT the context of this post nor was it the point.
Thank you for proving that for all the knowledge you have your reading comprehension SUCKS!
This is the last i will say on the matter i show nothing but respect to my piers and the people who have done their part in the industry but i WILL NOT TOLERATE being treated like some brainwashed single-minded "young pup" because someone got in there early ESPECIALLY not when despite my challenge you have STILL failed to actually state that what i said was WRONG!!!
Foxtrot Oscar you arrogant spud!
But this is really dumb Bbass i am not dismissing the information you gave i am just saying it was more than was needed and admittedly felt like it was trying to derail or say what i said was wrong.
You know yourself if someone gives you info that just seems "odd" your sat there asking why?
Anyways i am not doing this like i said i leave that comment but i have nothing but respect for people like yourself i just wish you would consider giving some respect for those of us who may not have worked aslong as you have but give you no cause to think we don't know our stuff too.
This thread was not to highlight AMD'd faults it was just to inform others of why the new suite was good and why fan control working is a big deal.
That said I might well take back this recomendation because after just finishing dinner and firing Ark up ... something is not right.
Anyway... doees the game work with crossfire?
There comes that time when infact the person talking to you really does and it doesn't register till AFTER you slap each other around for a moment.
I honestly don't know but what i do know is there are several known issues with Crimson with regard to games running with Xfire and im almost sure Ark was one of them.
I will check and get back to you.
EDIT: [82083] Ark Survival Evolved - Poor performance may be experienced when running in AMD Crossfire™ mode
I would say that if it doesn't it should be expected.
u can use MSI Afterburner to control fan speed....I use it for my Sapphire Toxic R9 270X.....I don't think anything has changed....Crimson's just a cooler name than Catalyst....no games has ever brought my GPU temp above 60C........
