You cannot fire darts while under water, but you can fire into water.
Scorpions are more lilely to kill something than knock it out.
You also forgot about Pachys ;)
Crossbow: From the Tranq arrow Page: When Primative Crossbow is loaded with a Tranq arrow the crossbow deals 35 Damage and upon hit, they instantly increase the target's torpor by an amount equal to 200% of the weapon damage and give an additional amount of torpor equal to 250% of the weapon damage over the course of the next 4 seconds.
Longneck Rifle:
Upon impact, the Tranquilizer Dart deals 26 base damage to the target, which increases with the quality of the rifle it's fired from. The target's torpor will increase by 600% of the damage dealt instantaneously, as well as an additional 250% of the over the next 5 seconds.
Hitting the target with another dart before the first one delivers all of its torpor will stack the effect in terms of time, meaning that if you hit a target a second time while it still has 2 seconds of torpor increase, it will then have 7 seconds of torpor increase.
Scorpion:
The torpor gained from a sting is equal to 3x the damage dealt.
A level 1 Scorpion will have 100% melee damage, dealing 15 damage and therefore 45 torpor.
At 200% melee damage, it will deal 30 damage and 90 torpor.
Getting your specific scorpion's torpor and damage applied per sting is as simple as multiplying your melee damage % number by 0.45 for torpor and 0.15 for damage.
The poison from one sting is applied over a duration of 10 seconds, so stinging in rapid succession will not knock out the target faster. The poison buffs do not stack. You need to refresh the sting every 10 seconds to deal the least amount of damage and maximum torpor.
Frog:
Sadly there wasn't any info about the frogs torpor infliction(or atleast specific numbers) Scouting about the forum, I'm getting alot of it "it's the same as the scorpion", people claiming the scorpion is more tanky then the frog but the frog is more mobile, which I can probably agree on.
Pachy:
Both the Charge and Non-Charge attack increases a targets Torpor when hit. The induced torpor by the charged attack even gets a bonus of 3.5 to the already increased attack damage multiplicator of 1.7 compared to the regular attack, resulting in a 5.95 higher induced Torpor. Increases in a Pachy's damage will make for a more effective, and quicker, knock-out. If you use the Charge attack to assist in the process, increases in Melee Damage and Stamina will make for more efficiency. Speed does not influence the induced Torpor.
My thoughts: try to make it to the crossbow, use that to get a dino that torpors, buff their HP and some Melee, so they can outlast everything to unconciousness, Dinos don't need to be repaired or need any ammo, so getting a frog, scorpion or Pachy is probably the best, all be it slower method of taming. Frogs kinda feel a bit tanky, Scorpions move rather slow, usually enough to kite and I've not fought a pachy yet but I'd say go for the Scorpion first, use that to get a frog, then if you wanna try a pachy, go for that I guess
Seriously, I ko'd an Ankly with my frog with very little damage because it can strike and hop away long before the Ankly can swing it's tail around. For small things like Dillo's the frog does a really good job. In fact, I'd probably put a high level frog up against a bigger one like a Carno or a Spino since frogs are far more agile than scorpions and can get behind to strike fast and move before the big one can turn around to bite back.
Scorpions or frogs are good for slow dinos but anything that can turn fast and hit hard, they are too weak, (ie: don't try it against a Sabre Tooth).
Big Dinos = Crossbow and tranq arrows.
Small ones, especially low level, Bow and tranq arrows.
Tranq dart = Lots of mats for not much gain over a tranq arrow, they seriously need a buff to make them worth the cost of making them. I hammered 21 tranq darts into a Spino with no effect at all before I gave up and went back to the cheaper arrows instead.
Running around the fields and zapping the bugs and looting them gets loads of Cementing Paste. I went out for 20 minutes and came back with over 500 Cementing Paste. Not to mention killing well over 25 Dilo's too. In addition, frogs are fast enough to outrun a Raptor.
I tranqued a Bronto, Paracetherium, Sarco, Dilo's, Frogs with it
Before that, I used the Scorpion with similar stats.
As mentioned by others, the Frog is the safest bet as it's hit-and-run technique makes for amazing survivability.
For example, if you are finding that the Dino you are trying to tame just won't go down or if an Alpha suddenly blindsides you, it's easy enough to sprint and hop away to safety.
Unless I'm KOing an aquatic Dino (Crossbow), I never use Tranq Arrows or Darts. I dislike the vulnerability and I find that wild Dinos interfere more when you're not riding a Dino and if sh*t hits the fan, it's not easy to escape.
Plus, I don't have to waste material building arrows and won't be ripped off building darts.
