Ptera ran out of energy and is now floating high in the sky.
I was flying back from a mountain and noticed that my ptera was running out of energy. I tried to land on the beach so he could regain some energy but didn't make it in time. We starting to go into an extremely slow uncontrollable fall, but after a minute he just suddenly stopped in midair. I tried jumping off to see if he would continue falling and nearly killed myself. After killing a dilo would thought I would be easy prey, I looked up to see that my ptera hadn't moved. Any idea how I can get my ptera down? He's my only flying mount and he's too high up for me to whistle to him.

Try using a telescope and whistle it extends the range of whistling.

Well .. .they messed up landing for pteranodons that run out of stam. Sometimes they simply stop. To solve this always whistle him on follow before you start. Cause when you jump of he dont listen to you anymore.

Solution now. Well try a spaglass look at him and hit T whistle follow one. Sometimes it works farer then it should.
If this does not help... well you need to wait for server restart and hopefully he comes down... or tame another low level pteranodon to get him on follow

Just tried the telescope/whistle method and it unfortunatly it didn't work. Looks like I need to another flying mount, I've been meaning to get him a companion anyway. Hopefully no argents spot him and kill him before I get him down. Thanks for the suggestions.

"sometimes" they stop, like it's some random thing. They are acting and performing correctly... How can they land if they can't see the land? They stop and throw you off when they run out of stamina and they are too far from the ground the land. It is quite easy to get them back, they still have stamina enough to follow anything down to the ground. There are many many reasons to never only have one flyer, this is one.

But the easiest thing for you is probably thatch foundation wooden ladder up to it. You can build ladder on top of ladder while on the ladders... infinitely into the sky from a single foundation.

Update on my ptera, I returned to where I left him, hoping to tame another ptera near-by. As I approached on my carno, I saw my ptera start falling into the forest. Excited, I rush over and start combing the area. Eventually I realize that he hasn't landed on the ground, but in the trees. I quickly chop down some trees so I can see him, and now that he's closer to the ground, I was able to use the telescope method to get him to follow me. Thanks everyone for helping me get him back. :D
