For Snow Biome Folks - Fortitude + Fur. What is "cold" and "icecube"
This is my first post for ARK and I've been reading a lot but I wanted to add this because of all the dicussions I've read, I've not seen exact "this temperature will fortitude will survive this temperature)

So in my attempt to clear up and kind of give rock solids I started out leveling fortitude a bit at a time and mindwiping to see what fortitude in fur armor (primitive) would be required to live in the snow biome exactly. The aspect that seemed to be missing other than just "fortitude numbers" was also the associating temperature. So for the starts here we are.

These tests were done on the Northwest side of Snow Biome at 30.3 Lat and 16.7 Longitude (GPS coordinates. It's a little bit north of the coast where the snow biome meets the regular land)

Forgive me for I was unble to achieve dynamic ranges on each exact temperature change and so these are my findings. For living in the cold and what fortitude you need to have with each temperature.

(281 Hypothermal insulation with just Primitive Fur armor (full set all 5 pieces) - I was at 32 Fortitude at this point so I subracted 66 insulation (according to wiki) from 347 to get 281 *base* insulation for cold*

All temperatures are in Celsius on the following.

0 Fortitude + Full Fur Armor (primitive) Survivable *cold snowflake* -8 C (-9 Iceblock)

6 ~10Fortitude + Full Fur Armor (primitive) Survivable *cold snowflake* -10C (-11 Iceblock)

(the 6~10 was odd because with 6 fortitude initially I was able to survive with the *cold snowflake* initially at -6 C, however the icon changed in the same temperature.

Going from 6 to 8 it went from an iceblock to snowflake once more then changed to iceblock.

Going to 10 fortitude made it a snowflake one more until it officially changed to -11 Celsius and was iceblock

24 Fortitude + Full Fur Armor (primitive) Survivable *cold snowflake* -12 C (13 Iceblock)
(this was tested in freezing water knee deep. Upon full submersion it required more.

30 Fortitude + Full Fur Armor (primitive) Survivable *cold snowflake* -13 C (14 Iceblock)

40 Fortitude + Full Fur Armor (primitive) Survivable *cold snowflake* No Accurate test

There was no accurate 40 Fortitude test for the reason below.

So things got crazy at this point and the temperature dropped to -19 C which was the temperature I was looking for since it's the most common Negative temp on this side of the mountain

76 Fortitude + Full Fur Armor (primitive) Survivable *cold snowflake) -19 C (no known iceblock but probably around -20~-21 C)

76 Fortitude and Full Fur Armor you will be "cold"

I personally went to 78 in case 19 has a hidden "temp change" similar to the 6~10 fortitude change.

Tests were done without a torch or other sources of heat. Strictly Fortitude and Fur armor

If you're a farmer like me this is what I needed to know.

Hope it helps.

Level 83
215 Melee Damage 300 weight and 78 Fortitude

All other stats no change.

I am a resource farmer for my tribe so I don't face danger often in case you're wondering about my stat distribution. We also have 3 argentavis with about 800 weight and 150% move speed so it makes mining trips off the mountain easier. with the fortitude making things just cold and not "iceblocking" should make farming easier.

I hope this helps everyone for temperature changes and sorry about the dramatic temperature jump from like 30 fortitude to 76.

players are generally always 'too hot' or 'too cold' even within an instant of each other, even with ~40 Fortitude. they havent even hinted that they are thinking about considering thinking about working on a fix for player temps so, just put these concerns on hold.

i have 40 fortitude and full fur gear and got the iceblock at -20°C

and sometimes i have -25°C at my place, srsly u dont wanna be there :D

good lord. 78 fortitude. That seems a bit over the top. I wish they'd overhaul the whole temperature system. I don't mind having fortitude in game, but the extreme temperatures should be handled solely by the armor you choose to wear.

Level 72, 420 health, 180 weight, 150 melee, 26 fortitude.
I live 99% in the snow, I've left the biome precisely once for a tame since it was deployed..
I spend a lot of time gathering resources too, our base is fairly big and fully enclosed.
Fortitude is manageable at 20-30. I have 26 now but was at 24 for most of the time.

About the 420 health, remember once you get to ice block your health starts falling. So you can ignore the ice block for longer with more health. It's enough of a reserve to recover health during the daytime. Fortitude apparently reduces the health drop rate when freezing. I rarely go below 80% health.

Only in coldest night time blizzards to I bother to hide inside with a standing torch, even then I don't really have to, it's an RP/immersion thing more than anything else.
To save food I often use torches during daytime if the cold icon is showing. We use a LOT of torches (btw repair costs the same as replace so just make more)
Get into the habit of switching to a torch when you finish using a tool if you see a cold icon.
Carry one or two stacks of berries and keep replenishing from the herbivore dino I'm using at the time, I rarely eat the meat theres no need for the boosted healing.

72 fortitude seems like a big waste. Using health as a reserve instead is multipurpose, I can tank wolf packs and argents - fortitude doesn't help you with that.

Such a waist of points.
Madpenguin Oct 17, 2015 @ 7:45pm
I agree that it is a waste of points for an attribute for the sole purpse of walking around being just "cold". If anything this illustrates that fortitude is bleh.

Thanks Madpenguins For taking the time to test this and share this with us. ;)

Thanks. It took awhile, but had the community in mind when I was doing it. Tribe mates were like "dude do it for the knowledge" ! Hope it gives everyone another way of viewing things in terms of Health / Fortitude / etc. Happy Gaming!

I just want my damn house-penguins already! :)

Now take a hit from high level scorpion naked and see how much torpor you get (or ask tribe mate to shoot you in the body with 100% crossbow). Then you shoot them, compare torpor values and time it took to KO afterwards.

complete waste of points but thank you so much for the information there Madpenguins! I really appreciate the time and effort to let us know. This proves the Fortitute attribute and player temps need a complete revamp, needing 76 points or even 40 points in fortitute is way over the top just to be able to walk around in the snow biome properly, and then having to survive attacks from all the dangerous stuff ontop of that....

Devs need to re-balance that a tad, unless there is something we can change or add in the game.ini file?

30 fortitude is pretty normal for non-show biome. I dont see how 40 is a waste for snow just because it lowers food consumption (you may as well use soups to achieve same effect) and makes life there much more comfortable.
Mike Rubik Oct 17, 2015 @ 10:12pm
20-odd points is plenty to walk around the snow biome.
and I mean 20 ish fort, which is 10-ish points spent.

Very interested in the torpor test though, maybe use a bow and narc arrow for consistency.

Bow with its damage depending on drawing time is not as consistent as x-bow.
