My point is not that it's impossible, but that it just looks so bad. What is the problem with encumbering a dino while shoving them in a box is ok? Both methods seem like exploiting the mechanic in my opinion.
I understand the point of enabling wandering, but I still think it's a very messy system if you are forced to shove them into a small box to do the nasty.
Perhaps. Then maybe a change in the wandering AI would be better if in range of a potential mate. If the two wandering dinos would both wander but stay in range of each other, this would make a lot more sense. Right now it's as if the two mating dinos have zero interest in each other and you're saying, "No one's coming out of this box until you make a baby!"
I have to keep Dodo's in a 1x1 pen ie the size of a single foundation placement, if in a 2x2 and they are in different corners they will not mate i.e hearts go off.
This of course means they literally can't move or wander, they just stand in the corner stuttering rapidly.
Not only that but you try and get a bunch of dodo's to follow you into a 1x1, no fun.
Same with other dinos, Dilos are limited to a 2x2.
I have trikes in a slightly larger pen because of their size, maybe 4x4, if they go to opposite ends they cannot breed.
Limits now are far too restrictive especially now that you need wandering on.
