Cannons?

Now that we have the ballista as a mountable weapon at primitive tier, how about a cannon higher up the tree? Here's what I'm thinking:

Very high resource requirements. Say 750 metal, 1000 fiber and hide, and 500 wood. I'd say throw in something higher-tier as well like pearls or oil but trying to think of something that makes sense (suggestions?). Maybe some obsidian and/or pelts (ram/sponge wrapping!)? Goal is something doable with some effort by a small tribe, but a pretty heavy investment for a line griefer.

Size would be a little smaller and a lot shorter than a ballista. Maybe have the muzzle be about the height of a window frame? Rafts-of-the-line, here we come!

Ammo. Thought of a few different ammo types:

Solid Shot: 20 metal, 100 gunpowder, 30 hide, 100 fiber. Fast, flat trajectory, bounces over the ground above a certain velocity. Moderate damage versus metal walls but no area effect. Keeps going through players and small dinos.

Explosive Shot: 40 metal, 200 gunpowder, 100 fiber, 50 hide, 20 oil, 20 crystal. Slower velocity and bigger arc. Explodes on impact, damage a little higher than a grenade with about 50% more area effect.

Stone Shot: 40 stone, 50 gunpowder, 20 hide, 50 fiber. Less accurate than solid shot and doesn't damage metal. Slower velocity and slightly higher arc, doesn't bounce. Basic for just anti-personnel/dino.

Grape/Canister Shot: 20 metal, 20 wood, 100 gunpowder, 100 hide, 100 fiber. Short-ranged anti-personnel round like a giant shotgun, doesn't damage structures at all. Thinking 10-foot average spread at 50 feet or so.


Final thoughts: the cannon should have some inherent inaccuracy, think smoothbore. That way it's beneficial to get closer than your maximum range. Overall, it should be less resource-efficient at breaking walls than grenades or C4, but make up for that by being able to do it from "way the neck over there." Figure a reload time of 5-10 seconds.

You know as soon as cannons are released (if they ever get made) within a day they would be no more than huge expensive potato launchers. Kinda like the ballista. Although, I personally would like to see cannons.

I really hope ballistas get un-nerfed some. They're almost useless as-is. Then again, most of that came from primitive players and I can kinda see where they're coming from. Should have been a separate rebalance for just primitive.

That said, these would definitely be beyond primitive level, so there wouldn't be as much problem there I hope.

But yeah, if there's to be any linear development of medium-heavy ballistics then a canon would be appropriate somewhere in the lineage.

What I wouldn't mind seeing is something between the cookpot and the industrial cooker/grill. Maybe a 'kitchenette' of sorts. Spendy for a solo or small clan but nowhere near the 3 sec per kibble performance of the big stuff.

Wow, was surprised to see this thread pop back up! Glad they're finally implementing these, but I hope it doesn't go as Sir Collin predicted, with them being nerfed into the ground immediately.
