If people are building on the volcano, the quetzals don't spawn. If they could alter the spawn points so that the quetzals spawn near, but not in the volcano, that'd be ideal.

They do spawn around it. Not as high as the caldera is
Ive spent long hours hunting down these guys, so far been all over the map for hours on end, and only location ive seen them is in the middle of the map along the river, the area he kept flying was HUGE however, from the volcano across the river to the south a bit, back to the upper northern west mountain.
finally got him down, tranq'ed only to be eaten by 20 ants before i could even land.... sigh

tried the soloing thing with a scorpion, he does sting the bird if u get close enough, and have him set to agressive, however could not take him down due to running out of stam on my bird and doing that for a very long time, and he bolts after hes hit...

and ya they fly really high , hopefully the update to the new dart is worth it.. the dart was just terrible... but last patch increased 100X so that should be better... fingers crossed, happy hunting... back at this tomorrow...sigh
ive seen atleast 3 of them, just gotta look in there common flight paths.
They're supposed to be rare. They are the ultimate end-game Dino. They are supposed to be rare to find, near impossible to knock out, and take a lot of resources to tame

I looked everywhere for officialdom on this repeated claim. I've yet to find it. Can you point to it for me please.

Officialdom? Considering their size it would seem that they would fill up the sky if they were very common and we would not see the sun. Seems pretty obvious to some of us.

Additionally, considering the problem some servers are having with reaching the max platform saddle limit it would seem fit this bird would not spawn in the dozens per server.
Days ago, we nuked our wild dinos to force them to respawn, and sometimes we can sweep the whole map and not find any. I saw a 20 this morning and nearly fell off my bird.
I think their respawn times are very rare, or very long between. But they do not respawn like regular dinos.
Perhaps it's just a right place, right time issue. There was one game day I spotted three different Quetzals. There was even a game day where I spotted one in the air from on the beach where I was gathering resources.

Supposed to be rare.
You can turn it into a flying fortress...
Some posts say there are people who have built plant turrets in the right spots to kill all Quetzal spawns so look for that too.
I found 2 the other day near the volcano, one beautifull green and an ugly brown one.
The brown one flew straight into the mountain and stuck there for an easy solo tame :)

oh did you take screenshots? I'd like to see where that happened.

This is the green one, its still circling around the same area. (think it might be its anchor point?)

A bit hard to see, but right in front of my bird is a little ridge, you can just land on it and dismount. (I died very often trying to narc and feed the queltz)
The queltz itself was stuck trying to fly straight trough the mountain, all I had to do was shoot it in the butt till it went down right next to that ridge. I had to jump/glitch on the wing to access inventory, with arg on follow just in case I fell:P

*Edit: Sorry, cant seem to get the images to load properly

whats the point if you would find one withing the first day... the bird wouldn't be rare and every single player will be flying a "warship"... no thanks dude... that would destroy the game.

Put effort in it and be patient and you will be rewarded, thats what separates the weak from the strong :)
I had a tribe on my server offer their lowest lvl Quetzal for either the position of a female or high lvl male. I set my view distance to ultra and took to the skys. i worked back and forth methodically maybe 5 meters above tree like. I found one in 20 minutes.
That being said they were incredibly surprised i found a lvl 92 male Quetzal in 20 minutes when one of their tribe mates had spent 20 HOURS searching.
Only thing I can think to do is to set view distance to ultra and search in a pattern. It worked for me so hopefully for you.
OH,and I found the Quetzal along the SE coast. It travelled NW the whole time I followed it and ended up getting put down on the NW corner of the middle island. Once the first tranq arrow hit the Quetzal it started to move more randomly but ended up staying in the same general area as the first shot the whole time it was being shot at.. hope that helps
