The regular fishing pole probably wont get you good stuff. To get a better quality rod you'll have to kill alpha giant squids till you get a decent one.
I suggest getting yourself a few basilosaurus at high level. The squid cant grapple them.
1. While the pole is in your inventory, click and drag the bait you want to use. For the event, honey is the best. It also works well with the other fish too.
2. Put the pole in one of your action slots. I usually put mine in 0.
3. As arn mentioned, you need to place a chair either on the ground raft etc and then sit in it. Activate the slot and then use your mouse to aim and click the water area you want to cast your rod into. The rod will plop the bait into the water.
4. Wait around 20 seconds(or much longer depending on the circumstances but recast if more than 2 minutes or if no fish around). Eventually you'll "hook" a fish and get 1 of 9 keyboard keys prompted to press on the screen. Press them as needed and eventually you'll reel in a fish.
5. For the non valentines day even items, the better your bait, fish size, and rod quality all affect the chances for what can be fished up including the blueprints. However, also your server/single player loot quality setting for beacon drops will directly affect the tier quality fished up. If for example you set the beacon drop loot quality to max, you 99.9% of the time will fish up ascendant blueprints etc.
Having a tamed high level squid has nothing to do with fishing.
You need bait to of course fish.
what kind of bait?
1. A basic basilo is not going to be able to defeat an Alpha Squid which drops most always a rod nor an alpha mosasaur which drops one a fifth of the time. You would need a high level well bred mosa as a safer bet for either imo. Besides a basilo takes damage when in super deep waters where both tend to be found.
2. I wrote in a followup post above that honey is the better bait for the heart coels for the event and read here in detail for more info on the other baits(note the last 2 baits mentioned on the page are for mobile ark and not ours: https://ark.gamepedia.com/Fishing_Rod
For heart coals and for large ones, best is honey. Honey also is better overall for large fish and large give more loot. Leech is more effective for smaller fish and depends on the type of fish too of course. Wiki covers all this.
Apprentice is max blueprint quality you can get without mods.
Incorrect. If you have beacon/loot drop quality set high on your server or single player, the blueprints can and will be ascendant.
Like i said. Mods.
Thats modified setting.
On vanilla settings you wont be getting them.
And we dont know what settings he is using.
Just to help clarify on this:
Mods refer to workshop modded content for the game. That's the typical naming convention for that.
Settings are something different. But I think you're well aware of that :P
If you wish to acknowledge settings changes for beacon drops/loot does change the tier quality then that's perfectly fine and correct.
And while we do not know the exact situation for the OP, letting him know that he does have potentially options that can have him reach his goals depending on his situation of course has merit....
That's why I clearly said that option in the very first post I made in point 5 at the top of the thread. :P
