Then buy a PS4... The SteamMachines are not worth the penny

The Alienware Steam Machine runs a custom Nvidia GPU, which has similar performance to an 860M - A low tier laptop card that has aged considerably poorly. You will not get particularly good performance from any of those Dell/Alienware builds. Think cheap laptop quality.

Yes, the i7 will perform better than the i3, but the GPU will absolutely be the chokepoint for the game.

If you have no interest in building your own PC, then fair enough - But definitely aim at a different Steam Machine if you plan on playing any games on half decent settings.

Indeed, you only pay for that crumby 'Alienware' nametag, it states that it has more power than a console, but for the price tag, it will not crush a console on output and performance. The selection of AAA (and upcoming titles) games is very very limited too.

Might improve over the next 6-12 months though

I am unfamiliar with all the models out there to be quite honest, but looking at the Syber, the P is not bad. It runs a GTX 960 GPU. Notice the lack of the "M" in that model. It doesn't sound like much of a difference, but the "M" stands for mobility, and means it is a cut down version of the card designed to produce less heat and drain far less power and as a result they perform terribly for gaming in many situations. The Syber P has a full desktop card by the looks of it, and as such would be a much better purchase.

The X model has a very decent card (980) but at that price then I *would* have to suggest building a desktop.

So yeah, if grabbing a Steam Machine look for around a GTX 960 (make certain it is not an M series card!). An i5 CPU is all you need.

I didn't ask anything about other games or complain about the price. I wish people would just answer a question like it's meant to be answered. I don't want to hear what you think it's monetary value is, I only care about performance. And I want first hand advice, not speculation.

I have the Alienware Alpha i7 model, swapped out the slow HDD for a SSD and upgraded it to 16GB RAM, and yes it does run the game, but your not going to get much more than low to medium settings and even then its not the best FPS, it could improve a little as the game is optimised, but I dont hold my hopes up; sadly, as mentioned by Ser the GPU is ridiculously poor and cannot be upgraded.
Its now parked under my bed linked to a TV as an expensive Netflix and movie player!

I have an alienware PC and won't be buying another. I have the X51 with the i7 and 16GB ram. It's actually a pretty awesome little PC, but it does have it's limitations.

It's about the size of an Xbox 360, which makes upgrading a pain in the ass because there is no spare room at all.

Surprisingly enough, it actually does take a full sized video card, but you have to be careful about which card you put into it due to the limited power supply. Sadly, you cannot just pop in another power supply because it uses a brick P/S like a laptop does. So unless you use an external power supply like I do, then you are very very limited in the hardware upgrades you can apply.

Also, dealing with Dell, has, in my experience, been about as awesome as sitting on a lit fire.

My advice is to stay away from Dell. Alienware is not the great company that it once was, and Dell...well I would rather have my foot stepped on by a mammoth than have to endure dealing with their staff once more.

Do yourself a favor buy a custom built PC from a place like NCIX or NewEgg. You will get more bang for your buck than one of these silly console/pc hybrids

or buy an XBone

Then I suggest the entire internet at your disposal, as reading a forum will always be speculation. I summarized that from 3 review sites, on the i3 and the i7 variant, so here is the advice.. away and search yourself

Honestly, if you care anything about performance, don't get the Alienware. Dell uses ♥♥♥♥ quality components and idiotic proprietary drivers with horrible performance. if you wanna get decent performance you need to wipe it and install proper windows/drivers and once you do that you've voided your warranty. for almost half the pricetag you can build/have built a far superior pc with much better quality components and better software/drivers.

I have the I7 model and I really enjoy it. It can run ark with good graphics but because of the state of the game you are going to have to pick and choose some of the settings to get the best looking with best fps. Honestly I like the alpha because it is easily portable and i need that. if you dont care about that get a better pc for the same price. Also it doesnt have audio in or out so you will need usb headsets. Hope i helped!

This is not alway true. I have been building computers for years, and when I bought my X51, I priced the components to build the same box. The X51 was on sale at the time so it would have actually cost me more to build the same box.

The box is 2 years old now, never had any issues with the components...and I always clean install the OS and use drivers from the manufacturer of said components.
