What do dung beetles eat?

You can tame them with EITHER raw meat, spoiled meat, or poop, and they will eat raw meat once tamed> I just wasn't sure if giving them ♥♥♥♥ to eat would actually fill up their food bar or not, because one of my dung beetles is half starved, despite having raw meat in its' inventory.
