Required Specs For Dedicated Server?
Currently I run a Dedicated Server for use of LAN. I run it of the same Desktop as I run the Client from.

In order to reduce the burden on my CPU(Intel I5-4690K) I was cosidering installing the server on one of my spare laptops.

My options are:
- Acer Aspire E1-522 with an AMD A4-5000 Quadcore CPU, 8gb ram and a 250gb SSD

- Alienware M17x-R4 Intel I7 3630QM Quadcore CPU, 16gb RAM and a 250gb SSD.

Obviously the Alienware is the better choice. But given the fact it uses more power, generates more heat, has louder fans and ties up a gaming laptop; I would like to avoid using the Alienware if possible.

That said, I am not willing to comprimise server on performance. If it needs to be the Alienware, i'll use it.

Will the Acer cut it?

Haha, I don't think I would trust a mobile A4-5000 to put out the performance needed for this game. Having said that I don't know how much performance you need to host a server for it, so give it a shot and let us know? I am actually interested in this. I have spare notebooks too and I've been thinking about trying to host a server.

Hosted on the Alienware so far. Unsurprisingly it works just fine as a server.

I would not reccomend hosting any sort of server from a laptop, the networking cards int hem simply won't be able to handle it once any sizable amount of structures is built or there are a decent number of players connected.

Not to mention it requires a sizeable amount of RAM. Each player connected adds to the amount of RAM required which a laptop simply wouldn't have. Spare desktops however may be an option, provided they have a decent CPU and a sizeable amount of RAM.

Also having a few discs in RAID 5 for example would be a way to help ensure stability, and to prevent data loss if a drive goes down (a big thing when you're talking about a server people will be investing a large amount of time in). The internet you have is also a big thing to consider what are your Download/Upload speeds and bandwidth. If you are only able to come up with a laptop to host I'm assuming you are probably living out of your parents house. I doubt they would be very happy with bogging down the internet for a 24/7 hosted server, not to mention the raised electric bill.

These are all things to consider.

Depends on the rig I guess.

You welcome to try, but it's not going to perform very well at all coming from any rented server, or any private home server. My friends and I are about to purchase an older Dell Poweredge 900 with 4 Xeon CPUs and 64GB of RAM to host our world. That's because even my desktop that I having hosting it which is an i7 3960X watercooled and overclocked with 32GB of RAM can bog down if there a several massive structures in an area.

What I'm getting at is this a laptop doesn't have the processing power, multi-tasking ability, or the network card to properly run a dedicated 24/7 server. You're much better off looking at craigslist or ebay and purchasing some older proper servers meant for this type of thing.

Hello, I have ran ARK survival (the graphical game client) on an A6-5200, which is a small step up from your A4-5000. It actually plays albiet at 15 FPS all lowest settings.

I also run an ARK server instance on a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz with 2GB of RAM. It is sufficient for 2 players at a time.

I am CERTAIN that your A4 will run ARK dedicated server just fine. The only requirement is that you do so in a headless server to save as much resources as possible for the game.

I am guessing your other laptop could do it fine. The server seems to want more ram then anything..

With an Intel Core 2 Duo 3.16 GHz, 8 GB RAM, and old 250 GB HDD, I run a 6 person server with no performance problems. With all 6 players on the server, CPU usage is around 40% on average and RAM use never seems to go above 6 GBs with an average of 4.6 GBs bieng used.

I am getting 30 FPS all round running the server from the Alienware. The Acer however, struggled Big time.

I find it funny you guys talk about raid / data loss prevention on a game that is in Alhpa. Are you rellly going to sit back and say that you wouldnt want a clean server to play on when the game goes live?

I know I am going to get flamed for the comparison but it is no different then a MC server getting wiped every now and then for a fresh start for peeps....

You are far more likely to get flamed for posting something that has nothing to do with the content of the thread.

You don't have "fps" on the server. Your other pc's struggle a bit when it's on the ACER?

Sure you are running a dedicated server instead of hosting in the game?
[LPNW] SP_Kenny Jan 23, 2016 @ 10:14pm
If you are running a true dedicated server (ark server process) all you should have is a console at the most

Regardless of which one you are running the server on, what are you using to play on (run the client)?
