ARK Server on Windows or Linux
Hi all

Has anyone experienced that Windows hosts more servers or has better performance hosting servers than Linux does?

I'm trying to figure out whether I should get a Windows or Linux server for hosting multiple servers.

But which is more optimized for ARK?

Thanks!!

I heard that Linux Servers had some Memory Leaks a Few months ago. Not Sure if all of them Are fixed (Even the upcomming Patch 232 will fix another Memory leak. Not Sure if this one is on the Client Or Server) on Windows Server you have some advantages like the ark Server Manager. One Click to update your Server, sliders And Buttons for any Parameter you want to Change. No ini file Changing is needed at all. I have a Server with 9 Mods And higher Rates with a Few Players. The Server doesnt Need more than 3.5 - 4.5 gb RAM. CPU usage is currently only 1 Core (Or did they Change that Finally?)

dedicated server uses more than one thread and so can use more than one core.
Linux servers run just fine. Given the fact that Linux will run faster as a server and can handle more network connectsion than Windows, I'd go with linux.

As for server configuring managing updating. Editing ini files is not a big deal and helps you to have a better understanding of what's going on. There is a script tool for linux called arkmanager, it is very good and now supports updating your mods as well.

In either case the largest constraint is to have enough free memory for each server instance you run. Expect 8gigs at the least, a well established busy server could use more I would expect.

Thanks for the replies guys, I should be able to run 5 servers on a server running Ubuntu 14LTS with these specs?

Intel Xeon E3-1230 3.2GHz
40 GB ECC RAM
240GB SSD

Or will it hog up my CPU? Or even my disk?

Thanks!

I thought that processor was limited to 32 GB. I have that same one with unbuffered ecc RAM.

Anyways the first respondant is giving misinformation.
-No memory leak difference between platforns.
-Arkmanage works on Linux serverd last I heard, but I personally would get this: https://github.com/FezVrasta/ark-server-tools

Your specs are fine. I'd suggest a newer kernel though than Ubuntu 14.02. 4.x kernels have improved auto TCP/UDP tuning from what I was told.

Edit: How many players per server are you expecting? Why would you need 5?

Server 1: 20
Server 2: 90
Server 3: 70
Server 4: 5
Server 5: 30

I'm currently running over multiple dedicated, want to merge to one. So Ive been looking at those specs, might be wrong perhaps it can only take 32 - I've just kinda tried to build in my mind what should be necessary.

I'm just scared the disk and CPU will take too much strain. The memory can always be upgraded I guess.

I can run Ubuntu 15 I guess, no problem...

What are your thoughts, will it work with those players?

At maximum each? Probably not. It takes about 30% of a core idle. I have never had a full house, but I do know the more players that join, the greater the CPU need for each.

I would start with 2 and see how those work out.

Ubuntu 15.10 isn't supported very long. I would look at Debian Stretch beta or Arch.

Thanks for your guidance :) I'll give it a go!

Yeah just launch a few servers and see how it goes. You don't want to put more up and then have a mess taking them down and all.

As its hard keeping good players..

so whats the matter about config files switching server win to linux? anything to translate?:hat228:

FYI ark servers need high cpu clock rate and only use two cores.
I believe the the offical servers are runnning on 6 core i7 K processors @4+Ghz
They run 3 instances per server.
