Problems building a roof over a behemoth gateway
Hi All

I'm building a covered barn to safely house big dinosaurs. It's a simple box shape with two stone behemoth dinosaur gateways on two opposing sides and two normal walls made of stone and wood on the other two opposing sides. The whole thing (including both behemoth gateways) is built on top of stone foundations. For the gateways I even placed stone fence foundations on top of the stone foundations to get the gateway to snap in to place (as per the tip on the wiki [ark.gamepedia.com]).

I'm working on the roof and have placed most of the wooden ceiling tiles now. The problem is that there are 6 ceiling tiles next to each behemoth gateway that I can't place because the building engine reports that they are obstructed. Here are a few screenshots that should help explain the problem:

Can't Place Wood Ceiling: Is Obstructed

It looks to me like the ceiling tiles should fit fine, but now matter what angle I try to place them at they won't go in. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong or have any ideas how I can close the gap in my roof? Thanks in advance for your help!

What about taking the roof one more higher, will the side walls go across the top of gates then ?

Indeed you do need to make the wall one higher. All the way around would be best so its not uneven looking, though if you don't want to do that much renovation just add line of walls facing the gate and either ramps or sloped ceilings to close that part above the gate.

Wow thats a pain in the butt.
I don't know, you could try and remove the gate, place the ceilings and then replace the gate. I know its a toll on resources but it could work?

I know this sounds kinda crazy but try opening the gate. I've found that oftentimes I'm able to place the tiles when the gate is open. Sorry you're running into that problem. That kinda sucks. :-(

It's about the building order here - as with most other things, it's a top-down style in Ark.

Behemoth gates are unique in that you can place them with objects clipped into them, but it does not work in reverse.

It may be less costly to demolish the behemoth gate, finish your ceiling tiles off to where they should be, and then place the behemoth gate again. You will find it will clip into the ceiling tiles.

And when you decide to convert the ceiling to another material you can replace it even though it is clipped into the gate. Just be aware you cannot replace behemoth gates in this fashion.

Thank you all very much for the speedy replies! :)

I will try all your suggestions in turn, from least resource costly to most resource costly ;)

Regarding building the wall one layer higher, I can't place walls on top of the behemoth gateways, so instead of the horizontal gap in the roof that I have at the moment I'd have a vertical gap in the wall above the gateways. Do you guys think that I'd be able to successfully fill the gap with sloped roof tiles or ramp tiles?

You can place walls that are hanging from a ceiling tile, so you should easily be able to fill that gap.

As copeland says, place the ceilings above then a wall below that. Might be cheaper to do the tricks like just opening the gate and placing the ceilings, would be neat if that works.

It might not be pretty but you could try sloped roofs, and just have a raised roof cover up the top and perhaps try to attach walls on the other side to close the gap.

You don't need to go higher but you do need foundations underneath
I'll explain more if I'm not beaten by another poster

Walls will place if attached to a foundation, you can attach 2 ceilings to a wall of any height but to attach more you need another foundation attached to the original foundation under where you are placing the ceiling. Your pictures don't show it but I assume you have no foundations running along the width of your gate, hence no more than the 2 ceilings already fitted can be placed
It's a bit more complicated but I'm typing at work

This. Put foundations on the ground below the gaps and you should be able to place ceiling above it.

@ a.copeland and Dorrin - my worry is what Commanding said: "Behemoth gates are unique in that you can place them with objects clipped into them, but it does not work in reverse.". If I place a ceiling one layer above the gateway and then attempt to place a wall below it might not work if the wall clips in to the gateway. I guess I'll just have to give it a try...

I think in the long run it might be better to demolish the gateways, build the whole flat roof at its current level and then place new gateways. It's a shame that I'll have to grind out the materials for the gateways and doors again, but at least I'll get half of them back when I demolish.

@ Spine_iv - the entire structure is built on foundations underneath

Gateways are pretty liberal in allowing you to clip with them. Gates, not so much. I'd definitely try just opening the gate and giving that a try. It seems like that should be all you need. I've done that trick a ton. :-)

Never had trouble opening or closing my gates. I've always built to one wall level above, bridged across with ceilings and then filled in the wall to fill the gap above the gate frame. Though simply opening the gate to be bale to place the ceilings would still be cheaper.
