I only want 3 slots. Am I stuck with Streamline, who appear to charge a minimum of $50/month for 40 slots? I' min Sydney.

Like if you want help, I can help you set it up. It shouldn't take more than an hour to do. I mean I don't know how long it would take you to download the files, but once you get them, it's really easy to do. The only time consuming part would be editing the settings to the way you like.

Candice, I'm not technical. I get a new bike when I get a flat tyre (only 1/4 joking).

However, I accept your offer of help and will give it a go. If you help me to successfully set up a no-hassle server I'll even give you a nice bike (with a flat tyre) if you live in Sydney.

What kind of server are you going to be hosting if you don't mind me asking? , PvE or PvP?

Pvp, but it's going to be very CareBear; it's for my two young boys and me to play on, along with anyone else we can rustle up. No wrecking, stealing, etc. :)

You could just host PvE , you can do declaration of war which can only be accepted by the person you want to challenge this then enables PvP between the times you agree on.

That sound like the way I'd want to go, thanks Chinwun.

I will help you. I don't live in Sydney, so thanks for the offer, but I'm good. Lol So basically all you have to do is log onto Steam on the PC you want to host the sever on. Open Steam, mouse over "Library" at the top and click "Tools." Look for "ARK: Survival Evolved Dedicated Server" and install it. Once you've installed it, right click it, select Properties, and click the Local Files tab. Click Browse Local Files, open the ShooterGame folder, then open the Binaries Folder and then open then Win64 folder. Once there, right click on an empty spot, mouse over "New" and select Text Document. Name it "start_server.bat" without quotes. If it gives you a prompt about changing the file type, just hit OK. It's not important. Right click the file and select Edit. Copy and paste :
start ShooterGameServer "TheIsland?listen?SessionName=NAME?ServerPassword=PASSWORD?ServerAdminPassword=PASSWORD" exit
Make sure you set NAME to what you want to name the server and set your password. If you don't want a password, just delete PASSWORD and leave it blank. Save the file. This is the file you will double click to start the server. Once you open it, it will take a few minutes to start up. In the console, it will say something like Full Startup: 214.18 seconds etc.

I don't know if these instructions work for you or if they might be vague to you. So if you need anything else, just ask. Also if you run into any problems let me know.

If you really need to, we can chat in Skype or Teamspeak. But that's up to you.
chad everstand 2016 年 1 月 12 日 上午 1:44
@Candice

Ok, I'm ready to give this a go, but I can't do it tonight. I've got the whole day available tomorrow. I'll try and follow these written instructions and whatever comprehensible info I can google or youtube. But yeah, it would be good to talk to someone if necessary; I'm a v. slow typist. Do I friend you on Steam to get your Skype? (have never done this on Steam before so not quite sure how to do it). I'd only contact you at a time that would be convenient for you. Cheers.

I've started downloading the monster-sized file! Anxiety levels rising already! Main worry is that I'll do something that will muck-up the currently perfectly-working 3-computer system I play on with my boys.

The process you describe is so much simpler than the one in this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l041YS888Hs

Strange.

Just start your own dedicated server dude. It's a pain in the ass TBH because rented server offer backups and restart timers and such and you don't have to worry about that but if you don't have a good offer then it's best to host yourself.

Just start the game make the needed adjustments and click on Start Dedicated server, when the server starts, stop Steam from you windows Task Manager, start it again and run ARK, then just join your own server :) there are thons of tutorials and it's really easy ...

I've got 3 desktop computers. Each PC has ARK installed on it. I want to play on one computer while my two sons play on the other two computers.

I'm not going to be able to run a dedicated server under those conditions, am I?

So with a dedicated server you can't play on the same instance of the program? Another question then - does a dedicated server actually run the world - like, is there an actual simulation that you can see on the monitor and what not? Or does it just do it without all that and just have some sort of operations screen? The reason I'm asking is because I want to know if the machine used to run a dedicated server needs to have GPU up to snuff to do it, or if CPU/RAM/HD is all you really need for it.
chad everstand 2016 年 1 月 12 日 上午 2:29
from that same discussion

quote=margalus;451848855001100340]the dedicated server is just a program that runs the game world, it is not a playable version of the game. There is no graphical representation or simulation of the world that you can see. It is just a program running. You can only see the world in the clients that connect and play on the server. The server does not need a gpu at all. cpu, ram, operating system and storage is all you need [/quote]

Oh I forgot about port forwarding. If you want to play on the same PC that it's hosted on, you may run into a problem where you can only have either the server or the game running at a time; not both at the same time. I'll add you on Steam and we can get it sorted out.

Just message me later and we can add each other on Skype and I can also help with port forwarding if you need.
