So, I tamed a parasaur (newbie questions)

I tamed a parasaur, my first rideable dino, spent engram points on a saddle for him, and I'm not sure why he would be useful. I thought he might be able to help collect berries or something, but I don't know how to make that happen. I can't even use my weapons while riding and it doesn't seem that he can fight. Did I just tame a completely useless dinosaur?

Whats the earliest available useful dinosaur after dilos? I don't want to spend engrams on useless saddles.

Why are there level requirements for engrams? Isn't the point cost limiting enough?

So far, I have leveled up building things I needed, but at level 16 I'm seeing a phase where I just have to kill stuff for no reason except levelling. This is getting a bit grindy for my time requirements, but I still can't safely explore the island, which is my main goal for this game.

parasaurs values lies mostly in carrying stuff for you and make you kinda mobile. but yeah, its not really a useful dino.

the most useful in the beginning are:
- Trike (you can collect berries with it)
- Raptor (killing some weaker dinos and farm meat/hide) they are also kinda quick, so you can explore and run away from stuff

an easy way to level in the beginning is by crafting wooden foundations. you can craft like 10. then place two of them on the ground next to each other. and replace then always one of it. (for fast demolishing of the existing one)
for every 2 foundations you demolish you can craft a new one. which gives you a lot of xp.

if you want to explore the island kinda safe a raft is also helpful.

Trikes and Carbys are fairly useful. Parasaur can be okay for getting around quicker and pack mules but that is about it.

My little sister has been breeding battle parasaurs though...

Anyway, Trikes are decent in combat and common and gather berries and some thatch. Carbys too, they usually have high hp and are pretty fast in the water though slow on land.

At your level I recommend fortifying your base, build taller outer walls for protection, a dino pen for your future tames, and as you build these you will gain enough xp to reach the level where you can learn more saddles.

Also, try to tame some dodos, buncha females and only a male to get dodo eggs, plant some crops and make dodo kibble which imo is the easies, does not require jerky. Make a bow and some tranq arrows, and a stack narcotics. With all that get your first ptera so you can have wings.
PS: do not shoot the ptera in the head or it might just die rather than passing out.

Parasaur is a early work mule. Have him follow you around and dump stone, wood, and stuff on him for him to carry for you. Other than that, worthless.

First early useful dino would be trike as it gathers berries like crazy. But there are other, more useful dinos that do that and other stuff too. Ankylo and Ape to name 2. You don't even need a saddle for the Ape. Stego is better than Trike for berries and Bronto is the best.

Ptera is lvl 35 and is one of the most useful dinos.

Usually my first 6 dinos are Raptor, Ptera, Argent, Ape, Dimo, Frog

I would like to tame a trike, but so far I have been severely pummeled by them when I try to take them on alone. My frame rate makes the slingshot useless, and my Dilo pack tends to kill things rather quickly before I can call them off. Should I be able to run up and club them down? Seems dangerous.

Don't bring your Dilos with you. Get a bow, and some tranq arrows if you can. Slingshot/rocks if you don't have it. Shoot, sprint away, turn/fire, repeat. Run around rocks and such. They tend to get stuck on trees too if you don't mind cheap tactics. You don't need a super high level one to start with. I'd aim for 20-30 lvl range to start maybe.

Try to climb on a rock and fire with a slingshot in their face. With a club you won't have much success.
Make sure you have enough stones >50 and material to repair your slingshot. Also the rock needs to be big enough so the trike can't hit you on it (and it can't walk on it).

My whole tribe started out with Trikes (we got kinda known for it to). Try finding a rock or low clif you can run towards but they cant follow you and use a slingshot and shetloads of rocks to get it down.

Always be carefull with more then one trike at once, they are ussually partnered and will attack at once. But if you find a nice safe spot on a rigde or cliff you can even tame 2 at once.

Just make sure you have enough mejo and narco berries stored in your parasaur.

Set your dillos on passive in a safe zone, or leave them at your base, find a cliff or a high rock, be sure there is only 1 trike and that you have at least 50 stones (maybe less are enough, but is better to have more than less).
Once the trike is aggro on you hit him with the slingshots till it's KO. Put narcotics or narcoberry in him (don't put all the narcotics at once couse if it will get up you'll loose all them) and feed him with mejo, wait for 1 hour or so and you'll have your tame.
I'd also learn the wooden fence foundation and place some tacht walls around him for protection from wild dinos, so you can farm and go around while he is partially safe.

Easiest way to tame a trike now is with a small taming house. Pre build the parts, you need 4 foundations and 8 of the doorframes without doors. Find the trike you want, lower level is better as it takes less resources to get. Place the foundations in a square, then place doorframes on 3 of the sides. With the trike a ways out from the open side stand in the middle and shoot it with your slingshot, then back up to the wall. As the trike charges in step out then run around to the open side and close it in. You can now safely step back and shoot through the door openings to knock it out.

I use small trees on the beach. Running between them where they can't reach me. They can sometimes climb rocks, and the trees give you good headshot access till it tries to run away.

;) Please do not attempt to club a trike! Your "game glitch" best bet is to find a dino stuck in a tree or a rock and get it down. That's cheap in a way but as you said, grindy grindy and you take your gains when you get them. My suggestion is...more levels. Keep killing and collecting, get your motor and pestal going and every time/chance you get product make narcs/stims/sparkpower/gunpowder. You will use it all eventually so don't worry about that. The sooner your get the bow...the sooner your get the decent dinos.

-Scorpion for taming/eggs
-Argentavis for air transport
-Pteradon for air scouting/air combat
-Gigano for raiding
-Bronto/Parecer for mobile ground base
-Quetzal for air transport/air base


I can go on, it realy depends on what you realy need, for a solo player i always get:
-Trike for berries
-Argentavis has a pack mule (The new Roo can fill this job i think)
-Raptor/Carno/trex/Saber/Wolf for meat/hide/chitin/Keratin/Prime Meat/Pelt farming
-Icthy for underwater farming

This 4 are mandatory for any player to be sucefull

A Parasaur was my first tamed dino too. :)

But that's exactly it really. I consider Parasaurs as a beginner dino to help new players learn how to knock out, and tame wild Dinos.
They run, making them a challenge for early level characters.

That aside:

• They can be used to carry extra materials for you which is useful for establishing your first base.
  
• They do collect berries. I'm not sure how many berries they collect with the new gathering values, but before they used to gather slightly more berries than the player could running around spamming E. (Parasaurs do not collect fiber so you don't end up missing out on berries).
  You have to aim it's head down and look at the bush before "attacking" it.
  
• Parasaurs also have an okay swim speed compared to other Dinos so if you are near water they offer a means of escape from Carnos and Raptors etc.
  
• Female Parasaurs drop eggs which are an ingredient for Raptor Kibble. (Kibble is an advanced food you use when taming so that the Dino tames faster and you get better bonuns levels at the end).
  
• Levelling a Parasaur's Stamina and Speed up can make for a good land mount that runs faster and longer than your early level character.

So as you see, they definitely have a use! More at the start of the game than the end.
